The 1969 season in the NFL featured four divisions and 16 teams. The four divisions were called the Capitol Division, the Coastal Division, the Century Division and the Central Division. This season would be historically significant for a couple of reasons. First of all, this was the 50th season of the National Football League. This season would also be the last season before the NFL and AFL would merge together. The championship game of the NFL was still known as the NFL Championship Game at this point.

The four teams in the Capitol Division were the Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins, New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia Eagles. This division as dominated by the Dallas Cowboys all season. The Cowboys jumped out as the sole division leader in week 2 and never relinquished their lead for the rest of the season. The Cowboys finished the season with a record of 11-2-1. The Redskins finished with a 7-5-2 record, the Saints finished with a 5-9 record and the Eagles finished with a record of 4-9-1.

The Century Division featured the Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers. This ...
... division was similar to the Capitol Division in that there was one team that was clearly superior to the rest of the teams in the division. By the 5th week of the season the Browns were 4-1 and in control of the division. The Browns continued to go strong for the rest of the season and finished with a 10-3-1 record for the season. The Giants were second in the division with a record of 6-8. The Cardinals finished 4-9-1 and the Steelers were the worst team in the division at 1-13.

The Western Conference contained the Coastal Division and the Central Division. The teams in the Coastal division were the Los Angeles Rams, Baltimore Colts, Atlanta Falcons and San Francisco 49ers.

The Los Angeles Rams jumped out to an early lead and would never fall behind. The Rams had a magical season in which many people thought they might even go undefeated for the season. The first loss for the Rams did not come until the 12th week of the season. Interestingly enough, the Rams did not win another game for the rest of the season after suffering their first loss. The final record for the Rams would be 11-3.

The Colts finished second in the division at 8-5-1. The Falcons and 49ers would round out the bottom of the division with records of 6-8 and 4-8-2 respectively.

The Central Division featured the team with the best record in the NFL, the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings finished at 12-2 while scoring the most points of any team in the league and allowing the fewest points. There were two other solid teams in the division as well with the Lions at 9-4-1 and the Packers at 8-6. The Beats would tie the Steelers for the worst record in the NFL at 1-13.

The Vikings and Rams would square off in the playoffs, but the Rams had already lost their momentum and could not take out Minnesota. The Cowboys were likewise bested by the Browns. The Vikings were just too good and dominated the Browns with a 27-7 victory in the NFL Championship Game. They would ultimately lose to the Kansas City Chiefs in the 4th Super Bowl.
