2002 World Series Of Poker

The 2002 World Series of Poker continued to demonstrate the growing popularity of poker and gambling in general around the world. The World Series of Poker is an event where the best poker players in the world can gather together to try to prove that they are the best in different types of poker. Players qualify for the event by playing well in other tournaments throughout the year. This year there were 631 entrants to the main event.
The main event of the World Series of Poker is an event where all of the players take part in Texas Hold ‘Em. There is a 10 thousand dollar entry fee for each player that enters into the tournament. This tournament would be the largest poker tournament in terms of size of prize pool to ever be played in a brick and mortar casino. That record has been broken since then, but there was definitely a growing popularity in the World Series of Poker that was demonstrated by the setting of the record.
The previous year held a prize of 1.5 million dollars for the winner of the tournament. This year the winner would be rewarded even more handsomely than the previous year. The prize money ...
... for the winner was boosted by to 2 million dollars. This was the largest amount of money available to the winner of the event in the history of the World Series of Poker to that point. The 2nd place prize was also higher than ever before at a flat 1.1 million dollars. This prize money was greater than the amount of money that the winner would receive in previous years of the tournament. Third place was scheduled to bring home 550 thousand dollars.
The tournament started in a flurry, just like in years past. The players were eliminated in rapid fashion. There were so many players eliminated at such a rapid pace that it was difficult to keep up with who was in and who was out of the tournament. The field was whittled down quickly until there were only 9 players remaining in the tournament.
The last 9 players in the field consisted of some players that are big names in the sport and other players that nobody has really heard of or remembers much. The final 9 players were Tony D, Minh Ly, John Shipley, Robert Varkonyi, Julian Gardner, Ralph Perry, Russell Rosenblum, Harley Hall and Scott Gray. There players were pitted against each other in attempts to bring home the huge 2 million dollar grand prize. While the 2 million dollar grand prize was attractive, many people were also motivated by the idea of winning the bracelet. The bracelet is given to the winner of the tournament each year.
In the end Robert Varkonyi would come out on top of the 2002 World Series of Poker. He would take home the 2 million dollar prize and the prized bracelet. Julian Gardner would place 2nd in the tournament, taking home 1.1 million. Ralph Perry would be the third place finisher, bringing home 550 thousand dollars.
