Tips For Moving To A Smaller Home

If you've ever moved from a smaller home to a larger one, you'll know the excitement of having all that extra space to put things in—you might spend the first few days or weeks after moving feeling really upbeat, enjoying all the new living room you have, and planning what you might buy to fill your new home. Then you probably began to realize that you spent all your spare money on the mortgage/deposit/rent, and that you're going to have to wait a while before you go out shopping for more furniture, etc.

Well, moving from a larger home to a smaller one is certainly different, but it doesn't have to be wholly negative. The trick, as with most moves, is good planning.

Before you get close to the moving date, try to get rid of as many things you don't need as possible. Try selling superfluous items online, or through secondhand/house clearance stores. If you have furniture that you know you won't be able to take with you, call one or two secondhand stores and ask them to come over and give you a price for as many items as they are interested in. Don't be too precious about the price; you will only get what ...
... someone is willing to pay, and you need to get rid of what you can. Any furniture left over, take to a charity store (some of these will even pick up items, which will save you time and effort).

Next, order your moving boxes. Supplies of boxes should only be sufficient to take what you can actually fit into your new home. When your moving boxes, supplies such as tape, and protective materials arrive, make them all up so that you can see how much room you have. First, pack what you absolutely need. Start with clothes, packing your most valuable (either in terms of cost, or usefulness) first, then move on to essential shoes. Assess how many moving boxes, supplies of bags and suitcases, etc. you still have to fill, and pack these next, leaving enough to take household essentials. In the last few moving boxes supplies such as kitchen utensils and equipment can go; leave these unsealed until the last minute in case you need to get anything out of them before you move.

You will now find yourself left with items you can afford to give away (do this as soon as possible!), and things you can almost certainly replace after moving to your new home, as and when you need them. These will be things like cleaning materials, cheap bits and pieces like tupperware, or old items you haven't used for ages anyway. If you find something you really, really can't do without, contact the moving boxes supplies company and ask for one more box (or get one from the local supermarket, or use a refuse sack!). By moving day, you should feel confident that you have everything you need, and nothing that you don't. And you can give yourself a big pat on the back!
