If someone were to ask you where in your car is a lot of heat generated you are likely to answer that it happens in the engine where the fuel is combusted to convert the chemical energy of the fuel into kinetic energy and propel your car. Which of course is a correct and a great answer. But if you were to then think that when at the end of the drive your car is standing still again where all the energy that was created by the combustion of the fuel has gone, what would the answer be?

If you could have it your way you may wish that the energy have reconverted back into chemical energy and your fuel tank is back to the full position. But of course that does not happen and the energy gets dissipated away each time you hit the brakes. And therefore the brakes are another place where a lot of heat is generated in your car. You do not become aware of it much, because the heat is dissipated quite effectively by the braking system. There is a reason for the efficient heat dissipation because if that were not to take place the amount of friction would go down and you would get brake fade. This heat dissipation is done by the ...
... brake rotors. They also need to be good at generating friction when brake pads are pressed against them and the frictional force that occurs has to be transmitted by the brake rotors to the wheel of the car to slow it down.

With research brake rotors get better and better at performing these tasks and therefore if your car is a few years old you should consider going in for the latest brake rotors if you want cutting edge braking performance. You can opt for high performance options such as slotted brake rotors which have more surface area to generate friction. Though you should consult your car mechanic before choosing them as they might not really be required for your driving style. You can then choose to go in for the traditional drilled brake rotors.
