One of the latest kinds of pearls to be given a classification is the Scallop pearl. This particular pearl is a natural pearl that comes from the bivalve scallop that is found off the coast of California. Because this pearl is so new, it is only now being harvested and not many of this type of pearl can be found on the market. The Scallop pearl can be recognized by its creamy salmon and mauve colours and mosaic patterns.

The Scallop pearl had been overlooked by fisherman for a long time because of the quick time it took to shuck the pearls. Often the pearl was overlooked and lost when the shell was thrown overboard. This process of shucking is very quick because of the need to collect a decent amount of meat from the shell. These pearls are often very small in size and very rare as well. Only a few have been found that have reached any larger sizes. Less than two percent of all scallops produce any type of pearl.

From a collection of almost two hundred of the Scallop pearls collected by a fisherman, only a dozen were of the right quality and look to create a pendant. As more fishermen become familiar with this pearl, more of them may become available.
