Brought into existence in British Columbia more than two decades ago as an alternative to regular skiing, heliskiing has quickly caught on to enthusiastic and adventurous skiers in search of the ultimate winter sports thrill. Today, BC Canada is still widely recognized as one of the world's leading heli ski destinations, and attracts tourists by the thousands with each passing year.

Heliskiing Canada is all about accessing virgin and secluded alpine terrain via helicopter, and taking on some of the most challenging and exciting ski courses in the world. British Columbia is blessed with consistent snowfalls, cool temperatures throughout the entire year and ten wide-spreading mountain ranges, characteristics that translate to impeccable powder, breathtaking descents and highly diverse wild skiing terrain.

At present, the province of BC shelters more than 20 dedicated heliskiing operators, which together ensure great territory coverage. The large number of operators also spells diversity in terms of ski packages, amenities, accommodations and other specialized services. Moreover, the high competition in the business ...
... has brought down the average costs of heliskiing vacations, which means these days you can find quality services of the kind without burning a whole in your holiday budget.

Snow conditions and terrain particularities

Although BC Canada is famous for the challenging nature of its skiing terrain, the province is also home to more forgiving slopes, suitable for intermediates. The typical heliskiing adventure in BC Canada can involve taking on alpine glaciers, vast open bowls, tree-lined glades, chutes, steeps and couloirs.

Each year, the average snowfall in BC ranges from 10.5m/ 35ft on the west coast to a very generous 15m/ 50ft in the Kootenay Rockies to the east. Depending on the season, local climate, and major landscape features, snow conditions can vary from one-foot-deep champagne-like powder to light, silky corn snow. In BC, the heli ski season usually begins in mid fall and can last until late spring.

The list with the main heliskiing regions found in BC Canada includes The Bugaboos, Kootenay Rockies, Northern British Columbia, Cariboo Chilcotin Coast, Vancouver - Coast & Mountains, Thompson Okanagan, and Whistler. Each region is unique in its own right and presents visitors with a different series of advantages.

Heli ski tours available in BC

When it comes to heli skiing trips and formats, there are plenty of good options worth considering. Depending on your budget, time availability and, of course, personal preference, you can opt for a multi-day trip lasting up to a week (or more in some cases), or head to a ski resort and enjoy a single-day excursion. Packages can range from small groups to private, tailor-made circuits and, depending on the case, can include leisure activities like fishing, natural thermal spa experiences, mountain climbing, etc. Accommodations can be secluded rustic lodges or comfortable and luxurious in-town hotels.

Specialized equipment and recommended level of ability

Canadian heli skiing mainly addresses intermediate to advanced skiers in very good physical shape. Although each heli skiing operator follows its own policies and may occasionally bend the rules a little to accommodate less experienced skiers as well, to enjoy your trip to its fullest, it is best to come to BC only when you are feeling up to the challenge.

Operators typically provide powder skis and poles on location, although commonly through a rental service. Therefore, if you want to cut down on the costs of your heli ski trip, consider bringing your own equipment and gear with you. Moreover, don't forget to pack warm clothing and a fitting pair of boots.
