The UFC began competition in 1993, having just one event. The year was successful, bringing a lot of excitement and attention to the event, but there was still room to grow. 1994 would bring even more excitement and attention to the sport as it started to grow.

While UFC had just one event in 1993, 1994 would have 3 events. The first of these events was known as UFC 2. This event was the first and only event in UFC history that would feature a 16 man tournament. These fighters would take on each other without weight classes or weight limits. There would also be no timed rounds or judges. The only way that a team could lose by was by way of knockout or submission.

The fighters would have to rely on their corner to throw a towel into the ring to say that their team had given up the fight.
The UFC 2 event featured Patrick Smith and Royce Gracie. These fighters were on fire throughout the tournament. Smith fought against Ray Wizard, Scott Morris and Johnny Rhodes en route to making the championship match.

Meanwhile, Gracie was plowing through the competition using ground fighting technique that his opponents ...
... could not deal with. He made it through As Ichihara, Delucia and Pardoel before facing off with Smith in the championship match.
In the end Gracie would overcome Smith by way of submission to take the victory. Gracie was truly the most dominant fighter at this time in the competition.

The next event, UFC 3, would be a little bit different than the previous matchup. Whereas the last tournament featured 16 fighters, this tournament would only have 8 different fighters. If fighters became fatigued and withdrew there would be other fighters waiting to take their place in the tournament. This feature would be very necessary as there were a couple of fighters that were forced to withdraw for various reasons.

Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie were the two featured fighters for the match, but neither one of them was able to finish the tournament. Both fighters managed to win their first fights, but in the 2nd round Gracie was too fatigued and could not go in. He decided to throw in the towel, allowing Harold Howard to advance to the finals. Shamrock won his first two matches, but he suffered an injury in the 2nd match. This injury would not allow him to continue on in the tournament. Steve Jennum would take his place and actually won the tournament against Harold Howard in that final round.

UFC 4 would be another 8 man tournament. Gracie would be the featured fighter of the tournament and really game through in every match that he fought in. Gracie passed through Ron van Clief, Keith Hackney and Dan Severn through the tournament. Gracie's victory over each of those fighters came by way of submission. Royce Gracie was on top of the Ultimate Fighting world in 1994 as he really came through in every tournament that he fought in.
