The Men's Tennis scene was dominated by the likes of Manuel Santana and most of all Roy Emerson the two years previous to 1966 and many people were hoping that someone would step up and challenge those players. Emerson had managed to win 5 Grand Slam tournaments over the course of those two previous years and Santana had also managed to win a Grand Slam in each of the years as well. While these players were the biggest names in tennis, Fred Stolle also did manage to take home a Grand Slam championship the previous year in the French Open.

Emerson was a legendary player at the Australian Open. He had won the open for 3 years consecutively coming into the 1966 season and he looked to be the favorite to win again after playing so well in 1965. When it came down to it, Roy Emerson would not disappoint those that had high expectations for him in his play. He managed to take home the Australian Open championship for the 4th year consecutively.

The next Grand Slam tournament would be the French Open. This was the tournament that was really up for grabs. While Emerson had dominated some of the other tournaments such as ...
... the Australian Open and Wimbledon in previous year, many people had managed to take home victories in the French Open. In fact, prior to 1966 there had been a different winner in the French Open each year for 4 straight years.

Fred Stolle was the winner of the tournament the previous year, but he was not able to make a strong enough showing to take home the championship in 1966. Emerson and Santana were likewise beat out in their efforts to win the French Open in 1966. The winner of the tournament was a player named Tony Roche. Roche had not won a Grand Slam previous to that tournament and he would not win another one after that.

The next Grand Slam tournament to take place in 1966 was Wimbledon. Wimbledon has a rich history and Emerson had started to find a rhythm in the tournament in previous years. He won the tournament in 1964 and 1965 and seemed to be the favorite entering the tournament in 1966. However, Michael Santana was already beaten out in the first two Grand Slam tournaments of the year and he would not sit back and watch someone win another one. He went on to plow through the competition en route to taking a Grand Slam tournament championship for the third year in a row.

The final Grand Slam tournament of the year would be the US Open. This tournament had been won by both Emerson and Santana in the previous two years and they both seemed ready to step up and take another championship. However, Fred Stolle had other ideas. While Stolle was not able to take home the French Open in 1966, he made a great showing at the US Open. Stolle Managed to win a Grand Slam tournament for the 2nd straight year. This put him towards the top of the tennis world. He would then be mentioned alongside the likes of Emerson and Santana.
