The 1966 season in the NFL brought changes and started traditions that we still carry on today. It was the 47th season in the NFL and featured a new type of championship game for the winner of the league. The game was then called the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. Today we recognized this game by a different name, the Super Bowl.

This season would feature a new team in the league as well. The Atlanta Falcons joined the NFL, becoming the 15th team in the league. This new team made it necessary for byes to become a part of the NFL schedule. This theme of having byes is still present in the NFL today.

The league featured a few teams that many people expected to jump out and take on control of the league from the very beginning. One of the teams was the Green Bay Packers. The Packers started out the season with a win and had a remarkable season throughout the year. The Packers were historically good this season. They managed to hold at least a share of first place for EVERY game throughout the entire season. ... weeks. The Packers would manage to take home 12 wins on the season while only losing two games throughout the year.

In the Eastern Conference the St. Louis Cardinals jumped out to the early lead in the division. They managed to jump out to a 1-0 start and they would hold onto their perfect record for 5 weeks. In week 6 the Cardinals would finally tie a game, but they would maintain their first place position. They were solid for several more weeks, maintaining sole possession of the best record in the Conference through week 10.

The Cardinals were not the only team having success in the league however. The Cowboys were stalking behind the Cardinals for weeks and would grab a share of the lead in the conference in week 11. By week 13 the Cowboys had managed to grab sole possession of the Conference for the rest of the season.

The Browns and Eagles would finish in a tie for 2nd place in the Eastern Conference with 9 wins each. The Cardinals would finish with an 8-5-1 record for 4th place in the conference. The Washington Redskins managed 7 wins on the season for 5th place. The Steelers, Falcons and Giants would finish in 6th, 7th and 8th places with 5 wins, 3 wins and 1 win respectively.

The Western Conference would feature the Colts as a second place team with 9 wins. The Rams would be third place with an 8-6 record. The 49ers would be the last team in the league with a .500 win percentage. After the 49ers, the Bears, Lions and Vikings would fill in with 5, 4 and 4 wins respectively.

These two teams would qualify for the NFL Championship game after having such stellar seasons and taking the lead of their respective conferences. The NFL Championship game would result in the victory of the Green Bay Packers. The Packers would advance to beat the Chiefs in Super Bowl 1, becoming the first Super Bowl Champs.
