Rugby is a well-known and a very popular sport that is full of excitement and action. It does not matter how long someone has been around the sport, the fact is that the enthusiasm and the thrill of the game is always present. Canterbury is the name to remember in the rugby world. It is known as the company that manufactures the very best rugby gear in the entire world and is based in New Zealand.
Canterbury was founded over a century ago, in 1904, in the area of Canterbury in New Zealand; hence the name of the company, where it manufactured knitwear. It is sometimes known as CCC by the rugby community such as the retailers and the rugby fans. The brand is also well known for their rugby protective gear and rugby boots. It also manufactures rugby clothing for those that do not play the sport but without any doubt support the sport; the ones that are off the field! Rugby might be the brand's leading sport wear, but the company also produces general sports clothing such as football and cricket and also life style clothing.
The brand's slogan is "the World's Toughest Active wear" because their goal is to manufacture ...
... all merchandise to be resilient and to endure in the toughest of conditions just as the rugby sport demands. Rumour has it that no Canterbury sweater has been torn in an international game between 1967 and the final game of the 2007 Tri Nations.
In 2007, 21st of May, the company extended its horizons to the United Kingdom's Premier League. A deal was made with the English team Portsmouth to supply the team wear. This involvement into football, the most popular sport in the world, was not a first. Before Portsmouth, Canterbury supplied the team wear of New Zealand's, Football Kingz.
Although the brand has been founded in New Zealand, it has expanded in virtually all the continents as it is a favorite amongst the rugby community, world wide. The head office has now relocated from Canterbury to Auckland and the majority of the company is now owned by Kuwait Finance House, which focusses on rugby football. The European part of the company, based in Stockport, was sold in 2009 to JD Sports, a leading sport wear company in the UK
