The UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) is a league or mixed martial arts fighters that get together in order to show who is the best fighter of all time. The UFC has not been around for a very long time, actually originating in the 1990's. 1993 was the first year that the UFC ever held professional fights.

When the UFC first started hosting fights the matches were not subject to many rules at all. The early fights only had rules against biting, fish-hooking, eye gouging or throat striking. This was not the only crazy aspect of the UFC however. In the beginning, the UFC had no intentions of employing weight classes or limits on the number of rounds. The fighting would simply be between the strongest, toughest fighters regardless of weight and size. The fights were able to go on for as many rounds as the fighters could stand. This being said, the fights still generally did not last for more than a couple of rounds.

Early on in the fights that took place in 1993 Gracie was absolutely dominant. He had a style of ground fighting that most opponents could not deal with. His style of fighting came from the arts of Brazilian Jiu-Jutsu. He would go on to dominate the competition in the first event, UFC 1.

Gracie showed that the fighting was not all about strength, but also about technique. He dominated his opponents when they thought they had him in a position to put him away. This stand would not last forever though. This event, UFC 1, was the only event of the year. While the sport did not yet have any formal championships, it would be easy to crown Gracie as the champion of the first year of UFC competition.

The first year of the UFC was a good one with a lot of excitement, but many people were worried about the sport and it appeared that it would not survive for a time. Many people contested the legitimacy of the sport because it lacked rules and regulations. It seemed more like a bunch of guys getting together to get in a scuffle than an organized fight.

Original promotions even included rumors that there would be alligators and electric fences surrounding the ring. This would of course be something that may have attracted people to watch the sport in the short term, but it was clear that there were many dangers involved. In the end the UFC was warned by doctors that it would be a better idea to not include those sorts of things around the ring.

The UFC was still growing in maturity in many ways, but the event that took place that year was an exciting one that would set the groundwork for the sport that has become so popular across the globe.
