1965 Cfl Season

The year 1965 featured the 12th season of Canadian football. Although the sport had been going on for 12 years, this would be the 8th season for the CFL(Canadian Football League).
The Canadian Football League was broken up into two different conferences, the Western Football Conference and the Eastern Football Conference. The Conferences each had 4-5 teams that would play each other, vying for an opportunity to make the playoffs.
The Western Conference featured teams like the Calgary Stampeders, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Saskatchewan Roughriders, BC Lions and the Edmonton Eskimos. These teams would play a 16 game season in order to decide who would represent their division in the playoffs.
The East Football Conference featured the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Ottawa Rough Riders, Montreal Alouettes and Toronto Argonauts.
These teams would play in a 14 game season in order to decide which two teams would represent the conference in the playoffs.
The Western Football Conference was dominated that season by two teams, the Calgary Stampeders and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Calgary managed to take home 12 ...
... wins and Winnipeg won 11 games on the season. The other teams in the league, Saskatchewan, BC and Edmonton, managed to win 8, 6 and 5 games respectively.
The Eastern Football Conference was dominated by the Tiger-Cats. They were by far the top team in the league with 10 wins in 14 games. Meanwhile the Rough Riders came in 2nd with 7 wins. Montreal and Toronto won 5 and 3 games respectively.
The second and third place teams from each conference would square off for an opportunity to play against the top ranked team in the conference.
In the Conference Semi-Finals Montreal and Ottawa would square off in the Eastern Semi-Finals. In the Western Semi's the Roughriders and Blue Bombers would play. In the end Ottawa and Winnipeg won their games, advancing to the Conference Finals.
The Conference Finals would feature a best of three series. The teams would play 3 games against each other in 7 days in order to determine the best representative for the Grey Cup.
In the Western Finals the Calgary Stampeders dominated the first game with a 27-9 victory. This really put the Blue Bombers in a tough spot. They dropped their first game and really looked as if they would not be able to hang with the Stampeders.
Against all odds Winnipeg was able to come back in game 2 and take the victory. The series was then tied at 1, leaving game 3 as the ultimate decider. In the end, Winnipeg was able to come back from their game one loss to win the Western Finals. The final game was decided by a score of 19-12 in favor of Winnipeg.
The Eastern Finals featured the Tiger-Cats and Roughriders. This series did not feature the same drama as the previous series as Hamilton was just too strong for Ottawa. The Tiger-Cats would beat the Rough Riders in just 2 games.
The Grey Cup would be awarded to the winner of the game between the Blue Bombers and Tiger-Cats. In the end the Tiger-Cats managed to take home the victory with a 22-16 effort. They would be the 1965 Grey Cup Champions.
