Basal metabolic rate is a helpful tool for those interested in losing some weight or in keeping their weight under control. It is basic knowledge that in order to lose weight you need to carefully plan your daily calorie intake. Unfortunately, how many calories you need to consume daily in order to ensure fat burning is not common knowledge anymore. This is where the basal metabolic rate comes in for giving you a helping hand. What is basal metabolic rate in fact? It is the number of calories that your body needs daily while in a resting state. Your body needs calories for everything, this including breathing and maintaining the heart rate.

Basal metabolic rate is basically the required calorie intake for a day in which you do nothing. Starting from this point, you can determine your daily requirements and you can stay healthy and maintain or obtain an ideal weight. This basal metabolic rate needs to be multiplied with level of activity multiplier to obtain the number of calories your body actually needs for functioning properly. It is naturally understood that the active you are, the higher the amount of needed calories ...
... is.

Basal metabolic rate differs from individual to individual depending on various factors. Some of them, like age, genetics, gender or height, can't be influenced by our actions in any way. Others, on the other hand, like the physical activity for instance, are strongly connected with our willpower and determination. Basal metabolic rate is going to be different in males than in females. However, determining your BMR is nothing difficult and all you have to do is to find an online BMR calculator and to introduce the required information.

It is a common mistake that people make considering that in order to lose weight they need to consume less calories that their BMR. This however is not true because when this happens, the body feels that it is being deprived of energy and goes into the so called starvation mode. This means that your body will start piling up fat and making deposits in order to survive eventual lack of nutrients. Weight loss appears if you consume a number of calories that is somewhere in between your BMR and the calories you actually burn (the BMR multiplied with the level of activity multiplier).

It is useful to understand the way in which BMR can help you plan your diet and to find a BMR calculator that will tell you exactly where you stand and what measures you need to take.
