When you think of the wheels of your car you think of the tire that is its most visible part. But if you are to take a little longer and look at the wheel of your car you will spot the brake rotors. It is against the brake rotors that brake pads are pressed to stop the car. Brake pads have to essentially help create friction but brake rotors have a more complex function. They have to create friction and they also need to be able to dissipate the heat generated so that the brake system components do not over heat. And they also need to transmit the retarding force created by the friction to the wheel axle which will slow down the motion of the wheels and therefore make the car slower.

Drilled brake rotors have holes to allow the heat to dissipate when the brake pads are being pressed against the brake rotors. Slotted brake rotors have slots to do the same. They do wear out the brake pads faster though and you should consult your car mechanic whether they are really meant for you before making a decision.
