There is only one factor that makes good putters stand out from the bad ones. And that thing is confidence. Confidence in the putting green comes up from two things, which are know-how on golf basics and practice. Putting is a very personal thing, and most professional putters do incorporate a few fundamental rules into their own approaches. But there is a set of rudimentary guidelines in putting that novice golfers could follow.
First thing to do is to grip the putter like what the professionals do. Your hands should be in contact, your index finger should be lying over the pinky finger of your right hand. Try to imitate, but you can make some changes in your grip that you feel you are comfortable with. Grip comfort is one of the aspects that can improve putting skills.
Next, have your eyes completely on the ball. Always bear in mind that you have to line up the ball perfectly with the hole. To evaluate your current position, place a golf ball at the same level of your right eye. Then, drop the ball off. It should land just behind the ball to be rolled into the hole if you have drawn your bead properly.
Then, ...
... try to create a pendulum motion. Make a putter's motion swing much like of a grandfather's clock. Some golf putting aids may be able to help you develop such putting instinct. But the easiest way to pick this up is to think of your two arms as an upside-down pyramid. Swivel them to and fro, all at the same time. Be sure that you take the putter back at the consistent distance as you shift it forward. And sing it smoothly.
Keep the head of your putter low unto the ground throughout the swinging maneuver. Moreover, the putter club needs to be taken back straight from the ball, rather than towards inside or outside. This makes sure that the ball is hit with the minimum amount of spin, which is vital to control it more accurately. Commercial golf putting aids available in the market helps the golfer to develop such minimal putting stroke for ball control.
Lastly, choose golf putting aids that you think can help you in achieving a seamless putting stroke. Upon developing putting prowess, try it all out with a real putting club that you would use for a long time. For several years, professional golfers tend to use the same putter that they are accustomed to. A putter is a very personal golf item that must be taken considered upon.
