Persuasive Speeches Should Make Commonsense And Be About The Real World

Persuasive speeches should be reasonable. There is no way, for instance, that you can persuade a any sane group of people that they should all go out and rob banks. Nor can you persuade a group of pensioners that they should join a youth club. Of course if you are a wonderful speaker with great powers of persuasion you might be able to persuade people in an audience that they could restore hair loss with one magic ingredient. After all that's what travelling salesmen did in the Wild West long ago. Of course they were selling to people who wanted to believe that the magic potions on the back of the wagon cured baldness or got rid of eczema. Today you are likely to have a more educated audience and they would be rightly sceptical of such claims.

Yet if you just look at the television advertisements you will see just how easily people can be influenced. It seems that we all want to have shiny hair and cleaner clothes. So a persuasive speech that says cleanliness is next to Godliness might sway your audience. We all want fast cars if the advertisements are to be believed. You would want to be an excellent public speaker ...
... to get across the less exciting message that cars kill people and the environment.

Persuasive speeches, though, can change minds and influence people for better or worse. Think of political leaders who persuade a people to go to war. The reason may be self-defence of course but for every such case there is also a case of sheer aggression. Such persuasive speeches are, naturally, the exception. Most of us want to influence people about far more mundane matters. Speakers may want to persuade an audience that laughter is the best medicine and that it does us good to have a good belly laugh. There are certainly lots of statistics that back up that claim.

The best way to write a persuasive speech is to write about something that really matters to you. You might want to encourage people to try reflexology as the best possible means of relaxing for instance. You might want to share your belief in the afterlife although you would find it difficult to give statistical information. Yet if you truly believe you will sound convincing.

Most of us like to have a handyman referred to us by someone we trust. The same applies to speakers. They must make their audience trust them and then it will be far easier to persuade them. They can do this by telling a tale about their own experiences or quoting an impeccable source. So go on influence your audience. inveigle them and persuade them to your way of thinking.
