The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a franchise in the National Football League. The team has been around for nearly 35 years, having been established in 1976. The team began play in the American Football Conference. They played in that conference for one year before being moved to the NFC in 1977.

The Bucs have spent the majority of their history playing in the NFC Central. That lasted until 2001. In that season there was a new arrangement that moved them to the NFC South Division. The Bucs were always a team with ups and downs. In the first three decades that they took part in play, the 70's, 80s and 90s, the team managed to win exactly one division championship in each decade.

The Bucs simply could not find consistency. They came close to finding it in the late 70s and early 80s as they managed to win 2 division titles within 3 years. However, the team went on to have a very long drought. The team did not manage to win another division championship until 1999.

1999 brought hope to the Bucs. The team had just made the playoffs for the first time in 15 years in 1997 and hoped to somehow get back into the swing ...
... of things. It seems that they found the key to success for a while as they went on to make the playoffs for 4 years consecutively starting in 1999. The Bucs were led by a running attack and a defense that were the envy of most teams in the league.

The defense of the Bucs was famous for its Cover 2 format. The team had big, strong, fast players that managed to anchor the team. The most notable of these players were Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks and John Lynch. These three players were perennial Pro Bowl players and kept the team solid for many years.

On the offensive side of the ball the Bucs used a tandem running attack. They had the speedy talents of Warrick Dunn to go along with the powerful running of Mike Alstott. These two backs were tough to deal with. With a defense that kept scores low to go along with a time consuming running attack, the Bucs managed to find the formula for success.

That success just continued to build until 2002. The team had managed to lure Jon Gruden away from the Raiders and he had the offense working like it had never worked before. The Bucs were great that season and managed to make their way to the Super Bowl.

Ironically the team played against the Raiders. The Raiders were the former team of Jon Gruden and were looking to show him that he made the wrong choice. The Raiders were overmatched in every way as they were routed by a score of 48-21. This marked the first and only Super Bowl that was ever won by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The team has been struggling in recent years and hopes to turn things around soon.
