Pontiac- a division of General Motors- entered the pony car market with the Firebird model in 1967. Actually there idea was to make a sports car but later settled for a pony car. It was introduced in coupe and convertible body styles but subsequently the convertible model was withdrawn and at a later date a hatchback model was added. Initially it had a ‘Coke bottle' body styling but in 1979 they shifted to a more ‘swoopy' body style. In between they introduced a Trans AM version with upgraded handling, suspension, and engine. They also experimented with its hoods. They changed to a ‘Turbo Bulge' hood. Later they added to it a cold air intake system. They also experimented with an aluminum hood for a year but gave it up. In 1983-84 they discontinued the ‘Turbo Bulge' hood and reverted to a flat hood.

It would be apparent that though the hood is not a highly engineered component of a car but it does deserve some attention. One would assume that the hood only shields the car engine and the adjacent machinery from the outside elements. That is true but it can be experimented with to enhance its utility. ...
... New materials like carbon fiber have been developed. A carbon fiber hood is lighter which reduces the overall weight of the car. With lesser weight you will need lesser power to drive resulting in fuel economy. Moreover the carbon fiber hood reduces weight over the front wheel of the car which gives it a better balance. Carbon fiber hoods are also durable. You can provide vents in the Firebird hood to allow cold air to flow in the engine leading to better combustion of the fuel.

Carbon fiber hood has cosmetic value as well. It can be shaped in any design or style. If you wish you can color it. Other materials besides carbon fiber can also be used. Through the hood you can give your car an aggressive or any other look that you may choose. You will love driving a Firebird with a hood of your choice.
