Adi Shankaracharya And The Timeless Wisdom Of Non-dualism
Introduction
Adi Shankaracharya is one of the greatest philosophers and spiritual teachers in Indian history. Born in Kalady, Kerala, in the 8th century CE according to tradition, he travelled across the subcontinent, debated scholars and restored the clarity of Advaita Vedanta, the philosophy of non-duality. Though he lived only about 32 years, his teachings, commentaries and monasteries continue to shape Hindu thought more than a thousand years later.
For devotees and art lovers, his serene seated form, with a staff, a water pot and a calm teaching gesture, is a cherished subject in devotional art and is beautifully rendered in idol brass. Idol Brass offers handcrafted South Indian brass statues for those who wish to honour great teachers like Adi Shankaracharya.
1. Who Is Adi Shankaracharya and Why Is He Revered?
Adi Shankaracharya, meaning the first Shankara, is revered as a jagadguru, a teacher of the world. He is regarded by many devotees as an incarnation of Lord Shiva who appeared to renew the understanding of the Vedas and Upanishads at a time of religious confusion. His images show him in ...
... ochre robes, seated in padmasana, holding a danda and kamandalu, with his hand raised in a gesture of teaching. His life shows how knowledge, discipline and compassion can work together.
2. Early Life and the Call to Renunciation
Shankara was born to Sivaguru and Aryamba, who prayed to Lord Shiva at Thrissur for a child. He showed extraordinary memory and mastered the Vedas at a very young age. A well-known story tells how a crocodile seized his leg while he bathed in the river Periyar. He asked his mother’s permission to take sannyasa, and she agreed so that his life might be saved. The crocodile released him, and he left home. He later met his guru Govindapada on the banks of the Narmada and received his teaching.
3. The Philosophy of Advaita Vedanta
Shankara taught that Brahman, the ultimate reality, is one without a second, and that the individual self is not different from it. The changing world appears real, but its apparent diversity rests on ignorance, which he called maya. Knowledge removes this ignorance and brings liberation. He wrote authoritative commentaries on the Brahma Sutras, the principal Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita, and he held public debates with scholars, including the famous exchange with Mandana Mishra.
4. The Four Mathas and the Revival of Dharma
To preserve his teachings, Shankara established four monastic centres in the four directions of India. These are the Sringeri Sharada Peetham in the south, the Dwaraka Peetham in the west, the Govardhana Peetham at Puri in the east and the Jyotirmath in the north. His chief disciples, Padmapada, Sureshvara, Hastamalaka and Totakacharya, helped carry his work forward. The Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham also honours him as its founding teacher.
5. Shankara’s Stotras, Works and Shankara Jayanti
Beyond his commentaries, Shankara composed devotional hymns that reach every seeker. Bhaja Govindam urges the mind to turn from empty pursuits to the Divine. Soundarya Lahari praises the Divine Mother in beautiful verse, and Kanakadhara Stotram is said to have been composed to the goddess Lakshmi for a poor woman. Vivekachudamani explains the path of discernment. Shankara Jayanti is observed on the fifth day of the bright fortnight of Vaishakha, with discourses, hymns and processions.
Conclusion
Adi Shankaracharya remains a guiding light for seekers of wisdom. His life of learning, renunciation and service shows that truth can be understood through clear thought and steady practice. His teachings, hymns and monasteries continue to inspire millions across India and beyond.
