Introduction

Arupadai Veedu murugan refers to the six celebrated abodes of Lord Murugan in Tamil Nadu available in gold plating art studio, each marking a distinct episode in the life of the beloved Tamil God of wisdom, valour and youth. Pilgrims visit these six shrines as a devotional circuit, and each place reveals a different aspect of Murugan, from warrior to teacher to ascetic.

Rooted in the Tamil tradition for over two millennia, the six abodes stand for courage, knowledge and devotion.

1. What Are the Six Abodes of Murugan and What Do They Represent?

The six abodes are Thiruparankundram, Thiruchendur, Palani, Swamimalai, Thiruthani and Pazhamudircholai. Together they form a pilgrimage that follows the story of Murugan from his victory to his teaching, his renunciation and his union with his consorts.

Each shrine highlights one divine quality. Visiting all six is considered a complete journey through the Lord’s grace, and the circuit remains one of the most cherished pilgrimages among Tamil devotees.

2. The Six Abodes and Their Stories

Thiruparankundram is where Murugan ...
... wed Deivanai after his victory. Thiruchendur, on the seashore, marks his triumph over the demon Soorapadman. At Palani he stands as Dandayudhapani, the ascetic who gave up royal splendour after a dispute over a fruit.

Swamimalai is where he taught the meaning of the Pranava mantra to his father Shiva. Thiruthani is the serene hill where his anger cooled and he married Valli. Pazhamudircholai, a forested hill near Madurai, is linked with Valli and with the poet Avvaiyar’s famous encounter with a divine child.

3. Mythology and Origins of Murugan

Murugan was born from six sparks of light that emerged from Shiva’s third eye. The sparks were carried by the river Ganga to the Saravana Poigai, a lake of reeds, where they became six infant boys cared for by the Krittikas. Parvati then united them into one child with six faces.

She gifted him the Vel, the divine spear, which he used to defeat Soorapadman and the forces of darkness. The legend is celebrated as the victory of righteousness over ego and evil.

4. Murugan Festivals and Worship Traditions

Kanda Sashti, a six day festival culminating in Soorasamharam at Thiruchendur, is the most prominent celebration. Thaipusam, Panguni Uthiram and Vaikasi Visakam are also widely observed, with devotees carrying kavadi as an offering.

Tuesdays and the Krittika star days are considered especially favourable for Murugan’s worship, and the Sashti tithi each month is observed by many devotees with fasting and prayer.

5. Tamil Literature and Hymns Dedicated to Murugan

The Thirumurugatruppadai, composed by the Sangam poet Nakkeerar, is the earliest known work praising the six abodes and is part of the Pathupattu anthology. Arunagirinathar’s Thiruppugazh, with its rhythmic verses, is another cornerstone of Murugan devotion.

Kanda Sashti Kavacham, composed by Devaraya Swamigal, is recited widely for protection and strength. Together these works have kept the Murugan tradition vibrant across generations.

Conclusion

The Arupadai Veedu captures the full spirit of Lord Murugan as a warrior, teacher, ascetic and beloved son. Through his legend, festivals and hymns, the six abodes continue to guide devotees toward courage, wisdom and devotion, and the pilgrimage remains a living heart of Tamil spiritual life.
