Exploring Tara Mahavidya And Her Place Among The Ten Wisdom Goddesses
Introduction
Tara Mahavidya is the second of the ten Mahavidyas, the great wisdom goddesses of Hindu Tantric tradition. Her name means “star” and also “one who carries across,” pointing to her role as the divine guide who helps devotees cross the ocean of fear, sorrow and confusion. Worshipped across Bengal, Assam, Odisha, Bihar and Nepal, she is honoured as a mother who protects as fiercely as she nurtures.
For devotees and art lovers, Tara’s deep blue form is a striking subject in devotional art from idol bronze.
1. Who Is Tara Mahavidya and Where Does She Stand Among the Mahavidyas?
Tara is counted second after Kali in the list of the Mahavidyas, the ten forms of the Divine Mother described in Shakta tradition. While Kali represents time and dissolution, Tara represents guidance, speech and rescue in moments of crisis. She is known as Tarini, the saviour who ferries souls across difficulty. Her well-known forms include Ugratara, the fierce protector, Ekajata, the goddess with a single matted lock, and Neela Saraswati, the blue goddess of speech and learning.
2. The Iconography ...
... and Symbolism of Tara
Tara is shown with a deep blue complexion, the colour of the infinite sky and ocean. She wears a tiger skin and a garland of skulls, and she stands on a corpse or on Shiva himself. Her four hands usually hold a sword, scissors, a blue lotus and a skull cup. The sword cuts through ignorance, the scissors sever worldly bonds, the lotus stands for purity and the cup holds the nectar of wisdom. Her third eye and fierce expression show a compassion that destroys fear.
3. Mythology and Origins of Tara
The best-known legend belongs to the churning of the ocean of milk. When the deadly poison Halahala emerged and threatened all creation, Lord Shiva drank it and held it in his throat. The poison burned him fiercely, and the Divine Mother appeared as Tara. She took Shiva on her lap like an infant and fed him her milk, which cooled the poison and eased his pain. This tale presents Tara as a nurturing mother as much as a fierce goddess. Tradition also says the sage Vasishtha attained her grace through Tantric worship at Tarapith.
4. Tara Temples and Pilgrimage Places
The most celebrated Tara shrine is Tarapith in Birbhum, West Bengal, a Shakti Peetha beside a cremation ground, closely linked with the saint Bamakhepa. The Tara Tarini Temple on the Kumari hills near Berhampur in Odisha is another ancient Shakti Peetha. Other well-known shrines include the Ugra Tara Temple at Mahishi in Bihar and the Tara Devi Temple near Shimla in Himachal Pradesh.
5. Tara Jayanti, Tantra and Worship Traditions
Tara Jayanti falls on the ninth day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra, and devotees observe it with night vigil and the recitation of hymns such as the Tara Stotram. She also holds an important place in Gupta Navaratri, the nights dedicated to the Mahavidyas. Texts such as the Tara Tantra and the Tararahasya describe her worship. Tara is also revered in Tibetan Buddhism as Green Tara and White Tara, showing how her ideals of compassion travelled across traditions.
Conclusion
Tara Mahavidya is a goddess of guidance, courage and boundless compassion. As the star that leads travellers through darkness, she reminds devotees that wisdom and fearlessness arise from surrender to the Divine Mother. Her legends, shrines and iconography continue to inspire seekers, scholars and artists across India and beyond.
