A new car wash is billing itself as "zero waste" in both time and water.

The International Carwash Association estimates a traditional car wash can use 20 to 50 gallons of water. And do-it-yourselfers can use as much as 120 gallons at home. One company found a way to take most of that water out of the wash.

They use portable washing carts. All the tools are tucked inside for easy access and portability.
"We take that machine and park it behind any car that we're going to wash. The unit has a hose that's 12-feet long. That hose can go around the car without moving the car," said Phil Portman from GeoWash.
Phil Portman says the GeoWash method only uses about 1 gallon of water per car -- and the no foam formula used is also eco-friendly.

"The product we use is a sustainable product, that's how we clean the car. It does not harm the environment," Portman said.

On this day, GeoWash is operating in the parking lot of the Dominick's in Oak Park, Chicago as part of a charity fundraiser. Customers applaud the eco-benefits, but also say the convenience of ...
... getting a hand car wash while they shopped is a huge plus.

"When we pulled up just to do our grocery shopping, obviously I wasn't thinking of getting my car washed in the parking lot," said Rence Kretchmar. "Just turned out to be extremely convenient to have it done, so I thought, why not?"

GeoWash operates in the parking lots of shopping malls, supermarkets, airports, hospitals, golf courses, casinos, and even some companies and apartment buildings.
