The CIA certification is the globally recognized credential for internal audit professionals, awarded by The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA). To become a CIA Certified Internal Auditor, candidates normally complete three computer-based exams covering internal audit fundamentals, engagement work, and management of the internal audit function. Eligibility depends on education and relevant professional experience. In 2026, standard CIA application and exam fees total $990 for IIA members or $1,515 for non-members in applicable markets.
What Is CIA Certification?
The Certified Internal Auditor certification, commonly called the CIA, is a professional credential specifically focused on internal auditing. It is administered by The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) and is positioned by The IIA as the only globally recognized internal audit certification.
CIA certification validates a professional's ability to understand and apply principles involving:
Internal audit fundamentals

Ethics and professionalism

Governance

Risk management

Internal controls

...
... Fraud risks

Audit engagement planning

Evidence gathering and analysis

Audit reporting

Internal audit operations

Quality assurance

Monitoring audit results

One frequent search term is certified international auditor, but the official designation is Certified Internal Auditor (CIA). "Certified International Auditor" is not the official name of the IIA credential.
CIA Certification Exam Structure for 2026
The standard CIA certification exam contains three separate parts. The current syllabus is aligned more closely with the Global Internal Audit Standards and contemporary internal audit responsibilities.
CIA Exam Part
Official Focus
Questions
Time
Part 1
Internal Audit Fundamentals
125
150 minutes
Part 2
Internal Audit Engagement
100
120 minutes
Part 3
Internal Audit Function
100
120 minutes

All three parts use multiple-choice questions.
CIA Part 1: Internal Audit Fundamentals
Part 1 establishes the professional foundation needed for internal auditing. Candidates need to understand how internal audit supports organizational governance, risk management, controls and ethical decision-making.
Important knowledge areas include:
Foundations of internal auditing

Ethics and professionalism

Governance, risk management and control

Fraud risks

Part 1 should not be treated as a terminology exam. Many questions require candidates to distinguish between actions that appear reasonable and the action that best aligns with professional internal audit standards.
CIA Part 2: Internal Audit Engagement
Part 2 moves from principles into actual engagement execution.
Its major areas include:
Engagement Planning — 50%

Information Gathering, Analysis and Evaluation — 40%

Engagement Supervision and Communication — 10%

This section tests whether candidates can make appropriate audit decisions rather than simply recall definitions.
For example, a question may provide several valid audit procedures but require you to identify which procedure produces the most relevant, reliable and sufficient evidence for a particular objective.
CIA Part 3: Internal Audit Function
Part 3 focuses more heavily on managing and delivering an effective internal audit function.
Its current areas include:
Internal Audit Operations — 25%

Internal Audit Plan — 15%

Quality of the Internal Audit Function — 15%

Engagement Results and Monitoring — 45%

The revised structure makes understanding the modern internal audit function particularly important for candidates using older study resources.
CIA Certification Exam Cost in 2026
The certified internal auditor exam cost depends primarily on whether the candidate is an active IIA member.
Current IIA pricing for the standard CIA pathway is:
Fee
IIA Member
Non-Member
CIA Application
$120
$240
CIA Part 1
$310
$445
CIA Part 2
$280
$415
CIA Part 3
$280
$415
Total Standard Fees
$990
$1,515

These figures represent application and examination registration fees before possible taxes, membership costs, preparation materials, training or rescheduling charges. Pricing can also differ in countries where certifications are administered through national IIA institutes.
Candidates should therefore distinguish between CIA exam cost and their complete certification budget.
A realistic budget may include:
Application + examination fees + study materials + CIA certification course + possible retake/rescheduling costs.
CIA Certification Requirements
You do not necessarily need to complete your professional experience before taking the exams.
The IIA provides several eligibility routes.
Entry Route
Experience Required to Become CIA Certified
Master's degree or equivalent
1 year
Bachelor's degree or equivalent
2 years
Active IAP designation
5 years
No qualifying degree but eligible experience
5 years of internal audit experience

Relevant equivalent experience may include areas such as:
Internal audit

External audit

Risk management

Compliance

Internal control

Quality assurance

Other audit or assessment disciplines

Candidates with an appropriate degree or active IAP designation may generally sit for the examinations before completing their required work experience.
However, passing the exams alone does not automatically make someone CIA certified. All certification requirements must be completed within the applicable program eligibility period.
The standard CIA program provides candidates three years to complete the requirements after acceptance into the program.
How to Get CIA Certification
The practical path to becoming a CIA can be summarized in seven steps:
Check your eligibility based on education and professional experience.

Create or access your CCMS account with The IIA.

Apply for the CIA certification program.

Submit the required identification and education documentation.

Register and prepare for CIA Parts 1, 2 and 3.

Pass all three CIA examinations.

Complete and verify the required professional experience.

Once your documents, examinations and experience requirements are successfully completed, The IIA can award the Certified Internal Auditor designation.
Do You Need a CIA Certification Course?
A CIA certification course is not the credential itself. It is structured training designed to prepare candidates for the official CIA examinations.
A strong preparation course should focus on three things:
Concept mastery: You need to understand why an audit action is appropriate rather than memorizing isolated definitions.
Application practice: Scenario-based questions require professional judgment. Practice should therefore include situations involving independence, risk evaluation, evidence, controls and audit communication.
Exam management: Part 1 allows roughly 72 seconds per question, while Parts 2 and 3 allow approximately 72 seconds per question as well. Candidates must make decisions efficiently without repeatedly rereading lengthy scenarios.
The most useful training therefore combines syllabus coverage with timed questions, mock examinations, answer analysis and systematic revision.
How Difficult Is the CIA Certified Internal Auditor Exam?
The difficulty of the CIA Certified Internal Auditor examination comes largely from the similarity between answer choices.
A candidate may understand the subject but still select an answer that is technically possible rather than the best auditing response.
Preparation should therefore move through three stages:
Learn the underlying concept.

Apply it to audit scenarios.

Review why alternative answers are weaker.

Simply completing thousands of questions without analyzing mistakes can create false confidence.
The IIA itself provides practice questions based on retired examination questions, with explanations for correct and incorrect answers.
CIA Certification vs General Accounting Certifications
CIA certification is especially valuable when your career centers on internal assurance, governance, controls and risk.
An accounting certification may go deeper into accounting, financial reporting or public accounting, while the CIA concentrates directly on internal audit responsibilities.
That distinction matters for professionals targeting roles such as:
Internal Auditor

Senior Internal Auditor

Audit Manager

Internal Audit Manager

Risk and Controls Specialist

Compliance Auditor

Assurance Manager

Internal Controls Manager

Director of Internal Audit

Chief Audit Executive

For professionals already holding eligible accounting credentials, The IIA also provides a one-part CIA Challenge Exam pathway for qualifying CPA and CA holders. Qualified CISA holders have a Challenge Exam pathway as well.
CIA Challenge Exam: Important 2026 Development
Experienced professionals should check their eligibility before automatically registering for the standard three-part route.
In 2026, The IIA introduced a pilot Professional CIA Challenge Exam pathway for professionals with 10 or more years of qualifying internal audit or related experience.
For eligible candidates, the pathway uses:
1 examination

150 multiple-choice questions

180 minutes

For the experience-based pilot, applications run from April 1 through September 30, 2026, with applicable 2026 testing windows.
This makes pathway selection an important first step: a highly experienced auditor may have a significantly different route from a candidate entering through the standard CIA program.
Does CIA Certification Expire?
Earning the designation is not the end of the process.
Active practicing CIA holders are required to complete 40 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) hours under current IIA requirements and meet certification renewal obligations.
Maintaining the credential matters because CIA certification represents current professional competence, not simply a historical examination result.
Is CIA Certification Worth It?
CIA certification has its strongest value when your career direction includes internal auditing, governance, enterprise risk, internal controls or assurance leadership.
It provides a clearly defined professional framework and demonstrates that you have been assessed against a global internal audit body of knowledge.
Before enrolling in a CIA certification course, determine three things: your eligibility route, your total certification budget, and whether you need the standard three-part CIA exam or qualify for a Challenge Exam pathway. Then build your preparation around the current syllabus—not outdated CIA materials—so every study hour supports the exam you will actually take.
