Unp Vs Dmsf: Which Mbbs College Is More Affordable For Indian Students?
For Indian students planning to study MBBS in the Philippines, cost is an important factor when selecting a medical university. Two institutions often considered are the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) and Davao Medical School Foundation (DMSF). While both provide medical education without donation or capitation charges, their overall expenses differ because of their funding models, locations, and living costs.
UNP is a state-funded medical university located in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur. Its estimated total course cost ranges from Rs.22.48 lakh to Rs.30 lakh, depending on the selected program. DMSF, a private medical institution in Davao City, has an estimated overall cost of Rs.20 lakh to Rs.32 lakh. However, the final expense at DMSF can move toward the higher end after considering accommodation and living expenses.
A major difference appears in the yearly expenses. At UNP, first-year tuition is approximately ...
... Rs.4.18 lakh, while hostel charges are around Rs.84,000 to Rs.93,000 per year. Indian mess facilities may cost approximately Rs.6,000 to Rs.8,300 per month. At DMSF, first-year tuition generally ranges from Rs.3.5 lakh to Rs.4.2 lakh, with hostel costs of about Rs.80,000 to Rs.1.2 lakh annually. Food expenses can range from Rs.6,000 to Rs.9,000 per month, along with one-time expenses of approximately Rs.60,000 to Rs.80,000.
UNP's lower overall cost is mainly connected to its state-funded structure. Government support helps keep tuition comparatively affordable. In addition, Vigan City is smaller and generally less expensive than Davao City, which can reduce spending on rent, transportation, food, and other daily requirements. Over a five-to-six-year medical course, these savings can become significant.
DMSF, however, offers advantages that may appeal to students who can afford a higher budget. Its location in Davao provides access to a larger urban environment and bigger hospitals, which can support broader clinical exposure during the later years of medical training. The institution also has a substantial international student community, creating opportunities for interaction and networking.
The two universities also differ in recent FMGE performance. According to the comparison, UNP recorded a 19.57% FMGE pass rate in December 2025, while DMSF recorded 11%. Students should consider such outcomes alongside fees, clinical exposure, and their long-term career plans.
For students with a strict budget, UNP is generally the more suitable option because of its state-funded structure, lower hostel expenses, and relatively affordable living costs in Vigan. DMSF may be preferable for students who value a larger city, broader hospital exposure, and a sizable international student environment.
Ultimately, the better choice depends on your financial capacity and priorities. UNP focuses on affordability and a quieter setting, while DMSF combines medical education with the advantages of a larger urban environment. Before making a final decision, students should compare the complete course expenses, accommodation, living costs, academic structure, and licensing-exam outcomes. It is important to review the latest university fee structure and admission requirements before applying, as expenses can vary by intake, course selection, accommodation choice, and individual lifestyle during the study period.
