Ncaa College Football: History Of The California Golden Bears

College football is one of the most popular sports in the nation. To some people it is almost a religion. College stadiums often fill up with more attendees than professional sports and the atmosphere is just electric. One such college football program located on the west coast is the California Golden Bears men's football team located at the University of California, Berkeley.
The California Golden Bears play in the Pac - 10 conference and play all of their home games in the California memorial stadium. The team also has a total of 5 national championships as well as 14 titles in their conference. They have a rich history of winning and also some of footballs most memorable plays including the "Big Game" in 1982 when the team won the game with a kickoff return that included 5 laterals.
The men's football team originated in 1886 but was stopped from 1906 to 1915 because the school thought it was too dangerous of a sport to play. The University has had a team ever since 1915 and look forward to have many more years of good football.
In the 1920's, the California Golden Bears were unstoppable. They ...
... had a streak of 50 straight wins in the five year period from 1920 to 1925 and are third in the NCAA to go this far without being beaten. The teams during this period were all considered to be Wonder Teams and included players like Brick Muller. The coach over these teams was Andy Smith.
In 1929, the California Golden Bears were also part of one of the most infamous plays in college history. It was in the Rose Bowl and Cal's defense made Georgia Tech fumble the ball and it was picked up by Roy Riegels who was Cal's center. As he was trying to get around opposing players he ended up running in the wrong direction until he got to the one yard line where he was tackled. They ended up losing the game to a blocked punt and a safety.
From the 60's to the 80's the team struggled to find the same success they had in earlier decades and many consider it to be a long period of football mediocrity. The 1980's were especially bad, since the team only posted a winning record on one season in the entire ten year span. Fast forward to the 1990's and the California Golden Bears again returned to an elite status.
Most recently, the team did well early in the 2009 season but struggled being consistent throughout the season. They ended the note with a loss to Utah in the Poinsettia Bowl and stopped their streak of bowl wins that had been going on for four years in a row. They also struggled having a consistent running back and failed to get over 1000 rushing yards for any running back for the first time in 7 years. There were some changes in the coaching staff and the team looks much more improved to take on this 2010 season and regain their glory years of old.
