Three teams stand out for the Rugby World Cup

He believes the New Zealand national rugby union team, the Springboks. And the French national rugby union team are the team most likely to challenge for the title. These sides, he explained, are operating at a level above the rest and have the quality to beat each other on any given day.

New Zealand remains one of the most successful teams in rugby history. The All Blacks last won the tournament at the 2015 Rugby World Cup, and they continue to be a major force in the sport. Matfield believes that, regardless of recent changes in coaching or player selection.

New Zealand will always be a dangerous opponent in global competitions. France is another team that Matfield believes could finally claim its first World Cup title. Despite being one of the most talented rugby nations, France has never managed to win the tournament.

They have reached the final on several occasions but have fallen short each time. However, with a new generation of talented players and strong domestic competitions, many believe their time could be approaching.

However, Matfield suggested that Robertson struggled to bring all the elements together during his time with the national team.

The coaching role has now been taken over by Dave Rennie, who returns to the New Zealand rugby system after spending several years coaching abroad. Matfield believes Rennie’s international experience could prove valuable as he looks to guide the All Blacks back to the top of world rugby.

Although they entered the Six Nations Championship in good form, their progress slowed. After consecutive defeats to the Scotland national rugby union team and the Ireland national rugby union team.

Meanwhile, preparations for the tournament are already underway. South Africa’s head coach, Rassie Erasmus, recently announced a 49-man squad that gathered in Cape Town for the team’s first alignment camp of 2026.
