Not all anxious children look worried. Some look quiet. Some look angry. Some look “fine.” That is what makes childhood anxiety easy to miss.

Parents often tell me, “I did not realise how much they were holding in.” Anxiety in children and teens can show up in subtle ways. The earlier we notice it, the easier it is to support them.

Anxiety Often Hides Behind Behaviour

Children do not always say, “I feel anxious.” Instead, they might:
• Avoid school
• Complain of stomach aches
• Become irritable or emotional
• Have trouble sleeping
• Refuse to try new things

These behaviours are often misunderstood as defiance or laziness. In reality, anxiety is driving the reaction.

In child and adolescent therapy, we explore what sits underneath the behaviour. Once anxiety is understood, behaviour often improves naturally.

Why Anxiety Is Increasing
Studies show rising rates of anxiety in young people. Social pressure, academic expectations, and online comparison all play a role. Children are exposed to more information and more stimulation than ...
... ever before.

Their nervous systems are still developing. They need guidance to manage stress.

The good news is that anxiety is highly treatable. With the right tools, children can learn to regulate their emotions and feel more in control.

What Parents Can Do at Home
You do not need to fix everything. Start small.
Listen without rushing to solve.
Validate their feelings even if they seem small.
Keep routines predictable.
Model calm behaviour during stress.
Encourage gradual exposure to fears instead of avoidance.

For example, if your child fears speaking in class, avoid pulling them out of presentations completely. Instead, practise at home first. Build confidence step by step.

Avoidance makes anxiety stronger. Gentle exposure makes children braver.

When Therapy Can Help
If anxiety interferes with school, friendships, or daily functioning, professional support can make a significant difference.

Child and adolescent therapy offers:
• Practical coping strategies
• Cognitive tools to challenge anxious thoughts
• Emotional regulation skills
• A safe space for open expression

Therapy is not about labelling your child. It is about equipping them.

Parents are often included in the process. This strengthens communication at home and reinforces strategies outside sessions.

Building Long Term Emotional Health
Supporting anxiety early helps prevent future mental health challenges. Children who learn coping skills young often carry them into adulthood.

Happiness does not mean never feeling anxious. It means knowing how to respond when anxiety appears.

As a parent, your role is not to remove every obstacle. It is to walk beside your child while they learn to face them.

If you notice signs of anxiety in your child, trust your instincts. Seeking support is a proactive step, not an overreaction.
