Depending on where you go in the world, gambling laws are going to be much different. There are many countries that have very relaxed rules on gambling, and others that don't allow much at all. In Brazil, they tend to fall into the latter category. Ever since a partial ban was placed on gambling by the Dutra (the country's president) in 1946, gambling has had a hard time taking off there. The only real legal forms of gambling that are present in the country are that of lotteries and horse racing. There are also some loopholes about gambling machines, so you will see them frequently throughout the country.

When it comes to online gambling in Brazil, however, the country doesn't have much to say about it as far as legality goes. Brazil doesn't offer any gambling websites since the government won't allow them to be licensed in country. However, many Brazilian people can still gamble over the internet on sites that are hosted by other countries. The Brazilian government has no power over these other independent gambling sources so they haven't figured out a way to control it. There are more and more sites that accept ...
... Brazilian players and some of these sites have also catered to them by creating Portuguese versions of their sites.

Recently, the Brazilian government has tried to crack down on online gambling in the country. Having noticed that many players are still being able to access foreign sites, they have turned to other methods of legislation to help control the situation.

During the past year, the senate in Brazil has worked to try and pass a bill to ban payments that are being made on gambling sites on the internet. They are looking to mimic the UIGEA and it is expected to pass before the end of 2010. Part of the legislation includes that Brazilian ISP's block any computer access to any of the prohibited sites. If there are major violations then there could be some serious issues, including prison time.

The UIGEA bill is a bill that was created in the United States that doesn't punish foreign gambling sites, but will punish those that allow people to access it from the countries where it is illegal. So this turns the focus to internet providers and any financial institution or credit card company that allows the transaction to be made with one of these sites. This bill in the U.S. helped to get the popular gambling site Bwin to withdraw completely from the market in the U.S.. Brazil is hoping to do the same thing in their country and hoping that it has the same effect to deter online gamblers from approaching their citizens.

Brazil is looking to improve their criminal legislation and are holding strong in their fight against online gambling. Brazilian gamblers must leave the country, for the most part, in order to take part in the past time. In the future the laws may ease up, but for now they are still pretty strict about what is allowed both physically and virtually.
