Nfl: History Of The Houston Texans

Leagues are always adding new teams, and the NFL is no exception. The Houston Texans are one of the most recent additions to the National Football League as an expansion in 2002. The Texans are a professional men's football team that plays in the Southern Division of the AFC in the NFL. Although there used to be a football team in Houston (the Houston Oilers), it was eventually moved to Nashville Tennessee and became the Tennessee Titans. Houston fans were dying for another chance at a football team and it finally came to them in 2002 under owner Bob McNair.
The history of the Houston Texans goes back before 2002 to the year 1997. In 1997 the Oilers were moved to Tennessee and all of a sudden fans found themselves without a team. Through some backend work by Bob McNair and other investors, the city pushed for a domed stadium in the hope that it would get a bid for an expansion team. Over the next two years McNair worked hard to secure the bid and eventually got it.
By 2004 the team was in full swing. On their first game against in-state rivals the Dallas Cowboys, the Texans upset the team and became only ...
... the second expansion team in the league to ever win their first game in the league. They lost their next five games and ended up finishing the season at 4-12. The next season was much more the same and they fell short of big expectations. In 2005, the team took a dive south and went 2 - 14 for the season and ended up having the worst record in the league. The only good that came out of this bad season was that they won the right to USC Heisman winner Reggie Bush.
After 2005, Dom Capers was fired as well as a big chunk of his staff. In the offseason the big talk was whether or not the Texans would take Reggie Bush or Vince Young first overall in the draft. In the end, the team ended up taking Mario Williams who was a defensive end. The fans weren't happy about the decision and the media would call it one of the worst draft mistakes in history. In 2006 Bush would help the Saints to an NFC championship game and Vince Young would win rookie of the year.
2007 rolled around and the Texans picked up Matt Schuab as their new Quarterback. The season started great and they got wins in both of their first two games. After that they would struggle because of injuries and bad decisions. Schuab ended up missing half of the season because of injuries and their Pro-Bowl receiver Andre Johnson would miss 7 games. They ended the season being the last in their AFC South division.
Through 2008 and 2009 the Houston Texans have seen some major improvements especially in the area of quarterback. Matt Schuab finished the season with 4,770 passing yards which is 6th in NFL history. They are on their way up and should continue to get better as they add pieces to the team.
