Piracetam is also Known as Nootropil belongs to the family of cognition enhancing drugs called nootropics. It is a supplement commonly used in the application to aid memory enhancement, cognitive reasoning, motivation and intelligence. It was originally synthesized by Belgian scientists led by Romanian psychologist and chemist Dr Corneliu E. Giurgea in the 1960s; they discovered its qualities of improving people's mental facilities while proving safe to administer. Researchers successfully analyse it on elderly and fatigued patients. Recently its benefits of no side effect memory aid have led this supplement to be use by all groups of people ranging from school going children to college students. The studies on piracetam have revealed its qualities of interaction with oxygen which can help the cognitive of neural centre and memory abilities.

Dr Corneliu E. Giurgea's research in 1964 synthesized piracetam there by successfully creating the first nootropic supplement. Piracetam was tested and shown to have negligible side effects when taken in large doses. ...
... His primary concern on nootropics was that they should enhance learning and memory while protecting against chemical injuries and toxicity.

Successful trials of piracetam introduced an aid to a wide and vast variety of age-related ailments. The supplement is initially recommended for those with seizures, dementia, concussions or other neurological problems. Its minimal side affects did not require it to be distributed as a prescription. Individuals of all age groups start believing its benefits as it was available for the general public. It has become a popular study aid among students. It is used by parents as a treatment for childhood autism, though no study has yet produced results which would support such a use.

Piracetam, a derivative of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), is very similar in molecular structure to the amino acid pyroglutamate. It influences neuronal neuroplasticity and vascular functions, also influences cognitive function without acting as a sedative or a stimulant. Piracetam improves the function of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine via muscarinic cholinergic (ACh) receptors which are implicated in memory processes. The data from various studies showed that piracetam exerts a marked effect on cerebral hemodynamics producing a lowering of cerebral artery tonus and an increase of local blood flow. In addition, an increase of GABA content is noted, particularly following an experimentally-induced disorder of cerebral blood circulation. While large doses may be required, the human body receives well priacetam and is easily tolerated.

Piracetam is available in 800 mg and 1200 mg capsules or tablets. The usual dose is 2400 to 4800 mg per day in two or three divided doses. A high attack dose is recommended by the researchers to be taken for the first two days. Studies have found that often people taking lower dose of piracetam initially do not notice any effect at all until they take a high dose (approximately 4000 to 8000 mg). Thereafter, they may notice that a lower dosage is sufficient.
