Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli—two great batters who have been continuously serving the Indian Cricket Team for the last 15-16 years. Today, both batters are counted among the world’s best batters. Especially in white-ball cricket, both have a different aura. One is the batsman who has scored the most centuries (53) in the ODI format to date, while the other is known for his Daddy Hundreds in the ODI format. Both have retired from T20Is (29 June 2024) and tests (Rohit on May 7, 2025, & Virat on May 12, 2025) at almost the same time and are just focusing on the ODI format now. Both have shown their desire to win the ODI World Cup (the only limited-over ICC tournament, which both of them has been able to win together yet).

A couple of times, both have confirmed they will want to play the upcoming ODI World Cup, which is set to be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in 2027. However, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has sent some new guidelines for both of them if they want to play the ODI format. BCCI has sent the ultimatum for both to play domestic cricket along with international matches. ...
... They will need to perform throughout the tournament, and their selection will depend on their performance.

Rohit Sharma has already lost his ODI captaincy, and now he is playing as a batter. After the Champions Trophy 2025, the BCCI and the Team Management think that Rohit and Virat both took international retirements, but both have confirmed that they are not going to retire and will continue to play in ODIs.

Following this, both featured in the 3-match ODI series against Australia, where everyone watched their batting. Ahead of that series, it felt as if anyone who fails during the series will be dropped from the national team, and for a comeback, he will need to perform in domestic cricket. Virat Kohli failed in the first two ODIs, gaining two
consecutive ducks, but in the 3rd ODI, he scored an unbeaten 74 runs. While Rohit Sharma amassed 202 runs in the series. His cricket scores were 8, 73, and 121*. From that series performance, they both were featured in the recently held 3-match ODI series against South Africa.
In this series, Virat Kohli looked in incredible touch. He scored 302 runs in 3 matches, including 2 centuries and 1 half-century. While Rohit Sharma claimed 146 runs, including 2 half-centuries. For now, looking at their performance, it seems that they can manage to play till the ODI World Cup 2027, but what happens if they fail in between any of the series? Will management drop them?

According to India’s next cricket match schedule, the Indian Team will play their next ODI series against New Zealand in January 2026. However, after this, India’s next ODI assignment will come after a gap of 6 months, when India will tour England for a 3-match ODI series in July 2026. In between, maybe India will also compete against Afghanistan in a 3-match ODI series at home. Following this, the West Indies and Sri Lanka will also arrive in India for a bilateral ODI series until the end of 2026, while India will also play against New Zealand in an away series. In 2027, India will be playing the ODI-format Asia Cup and a couple of bilateral series. According to reports, Team India will play 45 ODIs, including ODI World 2027 matches and the Asia Cup 2027. So, Virat and Rohit will need to perform continuously. With this, they also care about their fitness. If all things are properly managed by them, it is almost clear that fans will watch another appearance of Ro-ko in the ICC Cricket World Cup.
