Health and safety training is a vital aspect of every workplace, ensuring employees can perform their duties efficiently while minimizing risks. Two essential training programmes that support this goal are the Online VDU Assessor Course and the PHECC First Aid Responder (FAR) Course. Both courses equip participants with the knowledge and skills to promote a safer, healthier, and more compliant work environment.

Online VDU Assessor Course

The Visual Display Unit (VDU) Assessor Course—also referred to as Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Assessor Training—is designed for individuals responsible for evaluating computer workstation setups. As modern workplaces increasingly rely on computers, laptops, and digital screens, prolonged use can lead to discomfort, repetitive strain injuries, and eye strain. This course helps participants understand ergonomic principles and assess workstations to ensure they meet safety and comfort standards.

Delivered fully online, the VDU Assessor Course offers flexibility and convenience, allowing learners to complete the training at their own pace. Participants gain insight into ...
... key topics such as posture, workstation layout, lighting, and screen positioning. They also learn how to identify risk factors and recommend practical solutions to improve employee wellbeing and productivity.

Upon successful completion, participants are qualified to carry out VDU assessments in compliance with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007. This qualification is particularly beneficial for Health and Safety Officers, HR professionals, and office managers seeking to maintain a safe and ergonomically sound workplace.

PHECC First Aid Responder (FAR) Course

The PHECC FAR Course, certified by the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC), is a comprehensive first aid training programme that equips learners with the skills to manage medical emergencies in the workplace or community. This course replaces the former Occupational First Aid (OFA) course and meets the requirements of the Health and Safety Authority (HSA).

The PHECC FAR Course typically runs over three days and includes both theoretical and practical training. Participants learn how to assess an emergency situation, perform CPR, use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator), control bleeding, manage fractures, and respond to a variety of medical emergencies such as heart attacks, strokes, burns, and choking incidents.

Successful candidates receive a PHECC FAR course, valid for two years, confirming their competence to act as a designated First Aid Responder in the workplace. A one-day refresher course is available for those renewing their certification before expiry.

This qualification is ideal for safety officers, team leaders, teachers, healthcare staff, and general employees who may be first responders in an emergency. Having trained FAR personnel on site ensures compliance with workplace safety regulations and, more importantly, provides reassurance that trained responders can act quickly and effectively when an incident occurs.

Conclusion

Both the Online VDU Assessor Course and the PHECC FAR Course play essential roles in promoting workplace safety and wellbeing. While the VDU Assessor Course focuses on preventing injuries through ergonomic assessments, the FAR Course prepares participants to respond confidently to medical emergencies. Together, these qualifications strengthen an organisation’s overall health and safety culture—ensuring employees are protected, supported, and compliant with legal requirements.
