Since then, Samoa has never missed a Rugby World Cup, proudly flying its flag at every tournament. However, their qualification path for the 2027 edition in Australia has been far from smooth, and now they face a do-or-die battle to extend their streak.

Japan and Fiji already qualified for the 2027 World Cup thanks to their performances at RWC 2023. Tonga and Canada secured the Pacific 1 and 2 qualifying spots as pool runners-up. That left one final place, Pacific 3 up for grabs between Samoa and the USA.

The decisive match took place in Denver in September, and it turned into a nightmare for Samoa. The Eagles produced their best-ever performance against the island nation, winning 29–13, their largest margin of victory over Samoa to book their place in Australia.

That defeat meant Samoa’s path to qualification became much harder. Their next challenge came against Chile, the runner-up from the Sudaméricano 2025, in the South America–Pacific Play-off. The first leg, held in Salt Lake City, Utah, saw Samoa trailing 25–8 before a thrilling fightback earned them a 32–32 draw.

But a week later, in Vina del Mar, Chile dominated the return fixture, defeating Samoa 31–12 to complete a 63–44 aggregate win. It was Chile’s first-ever victory over Samoa, and indeed over any of the major Pacific Island teams.

With that result, Chile qualified for their second consecutive Rugby World Cup. Samoa was left facing one final lifeline, the Final Qualification Tournament (FQT) in Dubai. Leading Samoa through this difficult period is head coach Lemalu Tusiata Tusi Pisi, a former national captain and one of Samoa’s most respected rugby figures.

Appointed head coach in April 2025, Pisi brought with him an impressive résumé as both a player and coach. He earned 42 international caps and appeared in three Rugby World Cups during his playing days.

Before taking charge, he had already spent time as Samoa’s assistant coach during the 2023 Rugby World Cup and the 2024 Pacific Nations Cup. Pisi’s start as head coach, however, has been challenging. His debut match saw Samoa fall 41–12 to Scotland at Eden Park in Auckland.

Subsequent defeats to Tonga, Fiji, and the USA in the Pacific Nations Cup followed. And then came the draw and loss against Chile in the South American–Pacific play-offs. Despite the rough start, Pisi remains highly respected for his leadership and vision.

Before joining Samoa’s coaching setup, he served as an assistant coach for Japan’s Toyota Industries Shuttles Rugby Aichi since 2021. Gaining valuable experience in one of the world’s most competitive rugby environments.
