And during the preliminary tests, we encountered a particularly remarkable creation. This machine is the Atilla, which is preparing to participate in the Revival’s prestigious Whitsun Trophy.  Van Dare-Bryan was a former Lotus engineer who harbored an ambition to construct his own racing cars after collaborating closely with Colin Chapman and Frank Costin.

He founded his business, Racing Developments, alongside Mark Perry during the early 1960s and commenced work ...
... on a sports-racing prototype. By 1964, after creating a limited batch of front-mounted cars, the modest workshop in North London manufactured what became recognized as the Attila Mk3, designed to contest in sports-car competitions across Britain.

This was an ultra-light concept with a tubular steel-frame chassis and a massive V8 engine installed behind the cockpit. And it was scheduled to appear for its debut at Aintree on 18 April 1964. Roy Pierpoint had been confirmed to drive, yet the vehicle never arrived. Forcing him to delay his first encounter with the Attila.

When Pierpoint finally managed to race, he secured a best result of second in that year’s Guards Trophy at Mallory Park. That Ford-powered car raced widely through the season, but by 1965. It was joined by a second chassis, followed later by a third, the very model presented today. In total, only three Mk3s were ever produced, making it a knowingly rare specimen. Mainly as the original 1964 chassis has vanished.

Merely two survive, and one of them has raced on a semi-regular basis at Goodwood Revival 2025 in recent years. We connected with the current custodian, Chris Wilson, during Revival testing to gather more insight. It mostly competed in British events, Wilson explained. I believe it was transported to Spa, though it failed to qualify.

Numerous drivers raced it during the era, including Mark Hales, who I think achieved the greatest success. The mid-1960s represented a golden period for independent ventures like the Attila. Striving to challenge household sports-car names such as Lola, Ford, Porsche, and McLaren. Yet this machine was a small contender swimming in waters that were rapidly expanding into a vast arena.

Its arrival at domestic racetracks aligned with a period of swift technological advancements in motorsport, and the compact development team could not maintain pace, relegating the Attila to an also-ran almost instantly. However, that reality does not lessen its identity as a lightweight prototype housing a thunderous V8 engine.

Goodwood Revival Friday Tickets: A Revival of History on Four Wheels

At present, the Mk3 operates with a 5.0-litre Chevrolet powerplant generating nearly 385PS (283kW), and Wilson clarified that his main focus is maintaining the car’s historical authenticity for Revival appearances. It is preserved in its 1966 configuration. Originally, it carried a Ford engine with an alternate gearbox and wheels, but it was updated annually, so today it sits in the ‘66 specifications.

We are working to secure every archival document, though it remains extremely challenging because this particular chassis was once fitted with an LG gearbox during experiments, but verifying it conclusively is difficult. Period photographs seldom displayed gearboxes. We have confirmed the engine and frame, but proving the gearbox remains problematic, although progress is being made.

While numerous classic racing cars are meticulously refined and engineered to guarantee competitive strength in worldwide historic series, Wilson chooses instead to preserve the Attila for a select schedule of events each year, of which the Revival is a highlight. Yet it is the competition at Goodwood that fuels his determination to sustain and showcase this fascinating vehicle.

For spectators, the Attila represents more than just another vintage racer; it symbolizes a rare chapter of motorsport history where small, independent dreamers dared to challenge the giants. Its presence at Goodwood Revival Friday Tickets ensures that enthusiasts not only witness a car in motion but also connect with the spirit of innovation and resilience that defined an entire generation of racing.
