The Silent Struggle: Understanding Postpartum Depression In Dads

By Krupa Abraham and Urveez Kakalia
Reframing Postpartum Depression:
When we talk about Postpartum depression (PPD), most of us immediately think of mothers. But what if we told you that fathers can also experience postpartum depression? While lesser known, paternal PPD is a real and serious concern that deserves equal attention. It can affect a man’s ability to bond with his baby, impact his relationship with his partner, and lead to emotional challenges that ripple across the family system.
The Hormonal Rollercoaster for Dads:
Just like moms go through a drop in estrogen and progesterone after childbirth, dads experience a dip in testosterone. This hormonal decline helps new fathers become more nurturing, but it can also leave them feeling disoriented, less confident, and “not like themselves”. Studies show that men with newborns have significantly lower testosterone levels, especially in the first month after birth.
Example: A usually driven and energetic dad might suddenly feel unmotivated or disconnected during his baby’s first year- not due to laziness, but due to biological shifts.
Sleep ...
... Deprivation and Role Overload:
Sleepless nights aren’t reserved for moms. Dads, especially those without paternity leave, often juggle work, house responsibilities, and nighttime parenting with adequate rest. Over time, this exhaustion can lead to burnout, irritability, and feelings of helplessness.
Example: A father who takes the night shift for bottle feeding while also waking early to manage household chores or a full-time job might find himself running on fumes.
Invisible Pressure, Unspoken Pain:
Unlike mothers, who might find support groups or healthcare check-ins, fathers rarely get asked, “How are you doing?”. The societal expectation for men to “man up” and be the strong pillar often prevents them from seeking help.
Example: A dad may hesitate to share his emotional struggles out of fear of being judged or dismissed with “, But you didn’t even give birth!”.
Recognising the Red Flags:
Paternal PPD can show up differently than in women. Warning signs include irritability, substance abuse, lack of motivation, physical complaints like headaches or stomach issues, and emotional withdrawal.
Example: A new father might begin working excessively to avoid being at home or feel an unexplained anger he doesn’t know how to control.
Pathways to Healing: Let’s Change the Narrative
The good news is, like maternal PPD, paternal PPD is treatable. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), medication, lifestyle changes, and nutritional support (like Vitamin D and Zinc) can help. However, social support and professional validation play a key role. If you are a dad struggling after the arrival of a baby, know that you are not alone, and your experience is valid. Postpartum depression in fathers isn’t a weakness- it’s a call for compassion and care. What might change if we started asking dads how they are doing after a baby is born?
