Watching some of history’s most beautiful racing cars rekindle classic battles on a circuit exactly as it was in its heyday. No modern run-off areas, no added chicanes. At Goodwood, skill behind the wheel was rewarded and mistakes came at a cost, but above all. The event brought the golden era of the circuit vividly back to life. The 1998 Sussex Trophy was unforgettable, ...
... setting the stage for the kind of on-track drama the Revival is now known for. Though this race came with a twist we’re unlikely to witness again.
Frank Sytner, a two-time British Touring Car Champion and founder of the Sytner Group, and the late Robert Brooks. Founder of Brooks Auctioneers, later acquired by Bonhams, lined up on the grid to renew the fierce rivalry that had defined that year’s historic motorsport season.

Behind the wheels of machines stood in history. The two were ready to put on a show at the Goodwood Revival Tickets Motor Circuit. Brooks’ Lotus, once raced by Graham Hill, was the kind of agile British sports car the Revival rejoices. Weighing just 500kg and powered by 200PS, it was quick on Goodwood’s wide layout. A strikingly crafted missile capable of reaching 140mph down the Lavant Straight.

Even so, the Lotus was slightly outgunned by Sytner’s 300PS (224kW) Lister-Jaguar. It promised to be a classic showdown between two heavyweights of historic motorsport. True to form, Sytner’s competitive instincts showed before the race even began. He angled the nose of his Lister straight at Brooks while they sat on the grid.
When the flag fell, Sytner put his plan into action, sweeping across the track and forcing Brooks toward the path of another Lotus 15. From the commentary box, Murray Walker and Simon Taylor saw it as a masterful move to edge Brooks out before unleashing all 300 horsepower of the Lister to charge into the lead.
The truth only emerged after reviewing footage from the Goodyear blimp. The two cars had made contact, with Sytner’s rear wheel spinner scraping the Lotus’ paint and knocking loose the spring clip on its rear clam shell, sending the bodywork arching up behind Brooks’ head like a cobra ready to strike.
Goodwood Revival Saturday Tickets: Brooks’ Relentless Charge Through the Field
Brooks was instantly shown the black-and-orange mechanical warning flag that his damaged car was a hazard to both him and the others. But fired up from the dramatic start and likely seeing red, he never noticed it. Instead, he charged on, focused solely on chasing down his rivals. Later, Brooks joked that the marshals would have had to lie across the track to stop him.
Luckily for the spectators, the marshals didn’t stop him, and the laps that followed became part of Goodwood folklore. Instead of holding him back, the clash with Sytner seemed to ignite Brooks. Pushing him to close in on John Harper and muscle past with a nudge into the chicane, claiming third place.

Brooks then set his sights on second-place runner Stuart Graham, also in a Lister-Jaguar. No small feat considering his car was hauling what felt like a parachute behind it. What I remember most about that race was the incredible duel with Stuart Graham, Brooks recalled.
Stuart was a far better driver than I, but his car was heavy and a real handful around Goodwood Revival Saturday Tickets with that big 5.0-litre Chevrolet engine, Brooks said. I remember it as a brilliant motor racing lesson from Stuart, lap after lap, every time I tried to get past, he’d shut the door.

Goodwood Revival Sunday Tickets: Brooks’ Brilliant Last-Lap Triumph
Brooks slipping ahead in the corners, only for the Lister-Jaguar’s raw power to thunder past him on the straights. Eventually, Brooks gained the upper hand, but Graham’s race came to a smoky end when his V8 gave out. Forcing him to raise a hand in surrender from a cloud of steam. A sight that would be unforgettable for anyone lucky enough to hold Goodwood Revival Sunday Tickets.
Brooks had fought his way from fifth to second, and he wasn’t about to ease off. Fueled by the sense of injustice from the race’s opening moments, he set his sights on Sytner. As the laps wound down, Sytner’s Lister Knobbly began to chew through its tyres, while Brooks’ lighter, smoother Lotus stayed strong. In the end, it wasn’t just pace but a flash of sheer brilliance that would determine the winner.

It’s hard enough to concentrate with a rival glued to your rear bumper, but for Sytner, the distraction was even greater. Brooks was chasing him with a massive chunk of bodywork flapping behind his Lotus. The opening Brooks needed came when the two leaders began weaving their way through back markers.
Sytner had the tougher job, being the first to warn the backmarkers he was coming, while Brooks slipped through with hardly any resistance. Then, with just two laps remaining and the pair closing in on Robbie Mackenzie’s Elva, Brooks seized his chance, executing a perfect switchback under Sytner at Lavant corner and, despite the Lister’s greater power, snuck to the lead around the outer of Woodcote.
