There are a few important changes to your home which it is suggested that you consider when your child gets to that difficult age where they change from being a baby and become a toddler.
When the baby was born you probably decorated a room for them, and possibly modified your use of other parts of the house. Now that the toddler plans to roam freely about the property, investigating and trying to eat everything which they come across, the main concern should be over their safety.
1) Guard rails. If you have stairs or a balcony then these have to be secured. No matter how many times you repeat that the stairs are not safe to play on they will be attracted to them as though there was some invisible toddler magnet built into them. There is a wide variety of guard rails and stair rails for you to choose from.
2) Garden. This is an area of special interest, and danger, to toddlers. First of all, leaving around tools, machines and other sharp objects is no longer an option. Another area to look at is any part of the garden where there is water. Children are invariably drawn to water and accidents can happen even ...
... in incredibly shallow pools. They should be covered or their access route blocked.
The best idea with the garden is to get a good builder to create a special children's play area, complete with sand pit and safe toys.
3) Sockets. These can be easily covered, with special safety covers easily available nowadays
4) Cupboards. The curiosity which is one of the basic instincts of all toddlers will lead them to open every drawer and play with anything they find. You should make sure that potentially dangerous objects are safely stored out of their reach and that cupboard doors have child proof latches.
5) Sharp edges. You will probably be amazed at the amount of potentially hazardous edges and surfaces in your home. You should cover, remove or otherwise eliminate these as much as possible.
You will never be able to completely remove all the risks of injury from your home, but these simple tips should help your toddler learn and play in a more secure environment. Some of the jobs are simple ones you can do yourself. For the more complicated tasks then finding a good tradesman online is now very easy, as local builders, gardeners and other specialist now encourage you to post your job details on special auction sites. You will receive back a list of builder's quotes from interested local workers.
