CROWNS
Crowns are prosthetic devices cemented onto existing teeth, essentially acting like a “cap” and covering a badly damaged or decayed tooth. The purpose of a dental crown is to protect the fragile tooth from fracture and give extra strength to the remaining tooth structure. Fractures, chipping and cracks frequently happen to teeth with large existing restorations or teeth under excessive load, as in sleep grinders and people who clench a lot.It can also improve the physical appearance of discoloured teeth. A dental crown also perfectly matches natural tooth colour and shape. ...
... At our practice, we do different types of crowns.
Crown is advised in the following cases:
Replace a large filling when there isn’t enough tooth remaining
Restore a fractured tooth
Attach a bridge
Cover a dental implant
Cover a discoloured or poorly shaped tooth
Cover a tooth that has had root canal treatment
The procedure of getting a crown requires a detailed impression of the tooth (or gum if the tooth is missing).
The impression is then taken and will replicate the tooth, allowing a true duplicate of a tooth, from the minor details, including the colour and shape. Finally, upon completion of the crown, it is fitted and permanently bonded to the tooth/teeth.

BRIDGES
A bridge may be recommended if a person misses one or more teeth. Gaps left by missing teeth eventually cause the remaining teeth to rotate or shift into the empty spaces, resulting in a bad bite, also food impaction. The imbalance caused by missing teeth can also lead to gum disease and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Bridges are tooth-coloured prosthetic devices that can be fixed or removable, anchored to neighbouring teeth for support and to replace missing tooth/teeth.
Dental bridges look and function like normal teeth and can be hard to distinguish from natural teeth. Bridges may also help reduce the risk of gum disease and help correct biting issues.
Depending on the position of a missing tooth and surrounding teeth, various bridges are available to choose from. A fixed bridge cements the natural teeth or implants surrounding the space. Fixed bridges are fixed and cannot be taken out of your mouth.
The bridge is fused between two porcelain crowns to fill the missing tooth area or teeth.
How long do crowns and Bridges Last?
While crowns and bridges can last a lifetime, they sometimes become loose or fall out. The most important step you can take to ensure the longevity of your crown or bridge is to practice good oral hygiene. A bridge can lose its support if the teeth or bone holding it in place are damaged by dental disease.
Keep your gums and teeth healthy by brushing with fluoride toothpaste twice daily and flossing daily. Also, see us regularly for check-ups and professional cleanings.
To prevent damage to your new crown or bridge, avoid chewing hard foods, ice or other hard objects.
A chipped tooth can definitely be a frustrating issue, but the good news is there are several ways to fix it! Depending on the severity of the chip, treatment options could include:
Bonding: A tooth-colored resin is applied to the chipped area to restore the shape and appearance of the tooth.
Veneers: If the chip is more noticeable or larger, a veneer can be placed over the front of the tooth for a smooth, natural look.
Dental Crown: For more significant chips, a crown may be recommended to cover the entire tooth and restore its function and appearance.
Filing: If the chip is small, the dentist might be able to simply smooth it out, preventing it from causing further damage.
Have you experienced a chipped tooth, or are you just curious about how to handle it?
A crown and bridge are common dental restorations used to restore damaged or missing teeth. They both serve to improve the function and appearance of your smile. Here’s a quick breakdown:
Dental Crown:
A crown is a cap that covers a damaged or weakened tooth, restoring its size, shape, and strength. Crowns are used when a tooth is severely damaged due to decay, a large filling, or a chip. They can be made from various materials, such as:
Porcelain: Matches the natural color of your teeth.
Metal: Durable and ideal for back teeth, but they’re not as aesthetic.
Porcelain-fused-to-metal: A good balance between strength and appearance.
Zirconia: A very durable and aesthetic option.
Dental Bridge:
A bridge is used when one or more teeth are missing. It “bridges” the gap by using two crowns on adjacent teeth to hold a false tooth (pontic) in place. It’s like a permanent replacement for missing teeth and can help restore chewing function, prevent remaining teeth from shifting, and improve your smile.
How it works:
The dentist prepares the adjacent teeth by filing them down to accommodate the crowns.
Impressions are taken to create the bridge, which is usually made of porcelain or a combination of materials for strength and aesthetics.
Once the bridge is ready, the crowns are placed over the prepared teeth, and the pontic is anchored in place.
Both options are durable and can be customized to match the natural look of your teeth.
Are you considering a crown and bridge for yourself, or just learning about the options?
