Welding students enrolled in an Alaska's high school's summer construction program have undertaken the task of building a portable classroom. The project is being constructed behind the Kenai Central High School and will be relocated to one of the other schools in the fall, once completed.

Something Special for the Summer

The students in the summer construction project will get 1/2 a credit towards their school electives for completing the project. The welding training course was created four years ago and initially served only juniors and seniors. Currently, the project has expanded to serve advanced eighth graders through seniors. The class currently has a waiting list. Twenty students are allowed to be enrolled and thirty five signed up this year. Students from various high schools work together to make up the construction course. It allows students to build strong relationships with other schools.

The projected timeline for completion is one month. The skills learned over the month, will be worth more to the students than just school credit. Learning how to construct and weld a classroom will develop ...
... skills they can depend on during their entire life. Learning welding will be an important part of the summer construction project. The students will gain important field experience from this welding program. They will also learn framing skills.

The Finished Product

The portable classroom will be built to supply a classroom for up to 30 students. Once completed the general classroom will be 24 by 40 feet and portable for easy relocation if needed. The classroom can be moved to various locations to provide more room for students when needed. It is quite an accomplishment for welding students to build a classroom.

Past projects for the summer construction program include a shed that was built behind a high school's football field. Students who have worked on the shed get pride in constantly seeing their accomplishment as they attend the high school. The summer construction program is a great way for students to gain skill, pride in accomplishment, and life skills. Students and teachers alike have admiration for the summer construction program.
