The future of organization is here. Frederick, Maryland based research software company RURO, Inc., has recently released Sciency 2.0, an innovative electronic lab notebook, which is promising to be the next best thing in data organization for labs of all sizes. The essence of an electronic lab notebook, or ELN, is to replace the cumbersome amounts of paper notebooks still used by lab scientists today. In a typical lab setting, there are massive amounts of data which are kept on hundreds of pieces of paper. Organization of all of this information should be the primary necessity, but when projects are fully underway and deadlines approach, it can be hard to keep track of everything.

Thankfully, RURO has introduced Sciency 2.0. With their system, any lab performing any project can "design better experiments, flawlessly enter data, customize templates, easily integrate the ELN with other software, and keep all of this data in one place." Web-based and consolidated scientists can use the ELN on separate computers, so all data can be viewed in the same format, saved in the same location, and time will never be wasted searching ...
... fruitlessly as Sciency includes a keyword search. Another feature not seen with other ELN's is Sciency's function to color-code projects for level of completion. On one screen, several project titles can be viewed with colored bars ranging from red to green. A fully colored green bar would mean a project is complete. This kind of innovative visual project management is what is making RURO a top competitor in research software.

Another new element Sciency 2.0 offers is the ability to link notes together. Using keywords to link, Sciency creates a clear navigational path through the experimental data. The system also provides full revision history of all notebook entries. These features separate or combined make it virtually impossible to lose track of any data or messages-an invaluable resource for any big project with numbers of scientists.

Sciency 2.0 also comes with over ten technique-specific templates in which to enter data. These templates range from traditional lab notebook entry, experiment results, preparation of standards, preparation of reagents, animal phenotype data, and many others. There is also the option to customize and add templates.

Sciency is essentially paperless, but data sheets can be printed for hard copy documentation. Eco-friendly and made to fast forward scientific research to the next level, Sciency "saves trees, saves money, and saves you time."

Integration is also made easier with Sciency 2.0. The software is compatible with other lab equipment to make retrieving data as simple as clicking a button. RURO's website (www.RURO.com) comments on this function: "It captures analytical data from lab instruments, records experiment results, and exports data to LIMS, text or PDF files."

As technology makes leaps and bounds everyday, it's time research labs upgrade as well. Electronic lab notebooks are here now to help make your data the discovery of tomorrow. Simple to use and including top features many other companies do not have, RURO's Sciency 2.0 is the ELN on which any lab should rely.
