Managing Root Canal Pain: What To Expect After Treatment
Why Root Canal Pain Occurs
Root canal therapy is among the best treatments available to salvage a badly traumatized or infected tooth, but it always ranks as one of the most dreaded and painful procedures. Today, with contemporary dentistry, conditions have improved significantly. Post-operative pain may be anticipated, and when anxious about any root canal pain, there is something one should know beforehand and what steps can be taken to allow a stress-free recovery.
The purpose of a root canal procedure is to eliminate infected or damaged tissue in the tooth in an effort to stop further decay and pain. Even if the nerve was extracted, though, mild to moderate pain might be experienced for several days because the surrounding tissues and ligaments would continue to inflame.
The inflammation of the surrounding area post root treatment is primarily responsible for the pain and sensitivity being experienced by the patient. With the clearing of infection, healing of the body in response to that infection commences. Therefore, the healing of the surrounding tissues will take longer, especially if the tooth had ...
... sustained heavy infections before treatment.
Most patients experience mild pain lasting between one day to a few days. The tooth that received treatment may feel a bit sore upon chewing or biting; however, that sensitivity should begin to fade. Most discomfort will typically resolve within one week. In very rare cases, some patients may experience pain due to reasons such as incomplete cleaning of root canals, a crown or filling that is too high, or residual inflammation in the surrounding tissues of the treated tooth. Again, sometimes a new infection sets in either in or around the tooth. Therefore, if the pain persists after a week, especially if it worsens, a visit to the dentist for evaluation is recommended to rule out any such complications.
Managing Pain after Root Canal Therapy
Most of the post-root-canal pain relief is achieved through good care and medication given thereafter. Over-the-counter painkillers may come in handy; some might be things like ibuprofen or paracetamol; these would help alleviate discomfort and inflammation. Your dentist may prescribe Stronger medications if necessary. Soft foods might help for a few days after treatment which do not keep extra pressure on the treated tooth. Whereas hard and crunchy foods can increase sensitivity and prolong discomfort.
Maintaining good oral hygiene is very important, so gently brushing and flossing around the treated area should be done to prevent any irritation. A mild, alcohol-free mouthwash could contribute to easing tenderness. Try chewing mostly from the opposite side of your mouth for a few days to allow the tooth to heal without unnecessary strain.
It is important to follow up with your dentist as well if a crown is to be prepared on the treated tooth. Never rely on a temporary filling as a long-term mainstay, because staying too long without a permanent crown increases the risk for reinfection.
When to See Your Dentist
Some mild discomfort can be expected after root treatments, but should severe pain or lack of improvement be evident, then there could be a possible complication. Never ignore throbbing pain more than a couple of days, swelling around the gums or jaws, unpleasant tastes that last longer than a while, or sensitivity longer than two weeks. These are all indicative of infection or some other complication that would require urgent intervention.
Does a Root Canal Always Work?
Root canal treatment should work very well, but occasionally retreatment may be necessary. In these instances, hidden canals, incomplete cleaning, or reinfection may be the culprits behind the persisting problems. In this case, an apicoectomy may need to be done to allow the full treatment of the tooth. At Pearl Dental Surgery, we have modern, advanced techniques with cutting-edge technology toward maintaining the utmost precision and comfort for our root canal treatment.
