Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of the most accurate and modern diagnostic methods and helps detect a wide range of diseases. Despite its popularity, many people still do not know all the aspects of this procedure. In this article, we have gathered nine interesting and important facts about MRI that will help you better understand how this method works and what to expect from the procedure.

1. MRI doesn’t use X-rays
MRI doesn't use ionizing radiation unlike computed tomography (CT) and X-rays. Instead, the technology relies on a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of internal organs and tissues. This makes the procedure safe even when used frequently, especially in cases where long-term patient monitoring is required.

2. The basis of the method is hydrogen in the body
Our body is mostly made up of water, and water molecules contain hydrogen atoms. The MRI machine creates a strong magnetic field that causes these atoms to arrange themselves in a specific order. Radiofrequency pulses are then applied, temporarily changing ...
... the alignment of the atoms. When the pulses stop, the atoms return to their original state, releasing energy in the process. It is this energy that the machine detects and produces images of different tissues.

3. The procedure can take up to an hour
Depending on the area of the body being examined and the level of detail desired in the images, the procedure can take between 15 minutes and an hour. For example, a brain MRI usually takes 30–40 minutes, while a full-body scan can take longer. In order for the images to be clear, the patient must lie still.

4. MRI is not suitable for everyone
Despite the safety of the method, not all patients can undergo an MRI. The procedure is contraindicated for people with metal implants, pacemakers, insulin pumps, and some types of tattoos (due to the metal content in the ink). It is also important to inform your doctor of pregnancy before the examination, as the effect of the magnetic field on the development of the fetus has not yet been fully researched.

5. In some cases, the administration of a contrast agent is necessary.
A gadolinium-based contrast agent is sometimes used to provide a clearer image of tissue and vessels. It is administered intravenously and helps better distinguish tumors, inflammatory processes, and vascular damage. Unlike the iodine-containing contrast agents used in computed tomography, gadolinium causes fewer allergic reactions and has virtually no effect on the kidneys.

6. Loud noises are normal
During the procedure, the MRI machine produces loud knocking and humming noises. This is because, during the scanning process, the electromagnetic coils are quickly switched on and off, creating vibrations. To minimize discomfort, patients are usually given headphones or earplugs. Some clinics offer music or even videos during the procedure to make patients feel more comfortable.

7. MRI can be performed on children
MRI is also a safe procedure for infants. However, since it is difficult for young children to remain still for long periods of time, the examination is sometimes performed under light anesthesia. The child mustn't move, because any movement can distort the images and make them useless for diagnosis.

8. The MRI machine has a weight limit
Most standard MRI machines are designed for patients weighing up to 330 lbs. However, modern medical centers also have open-type tomographs that are suitable for people with higher body weights. Open units also help patients with claustrophobia, as it is not an enclosed space.

9. Preparation for MRI depends on the type of examination
In most cases, no special preparation is required. However, if an MRI of the abdomen or pelvis is performed, it may be necessary to fast for several hours before the procedure. It is also recommended to remove all metal objects before the examination: including jewelry, watches, and hairpins, as metal can affect the quality of the images and even heat up in a magnetic field.
