Fosamax, manufactured by Merck, is a prescription drug that is used to treat patients who have osteoporosis or are at a high risk of developing osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a product of an imbalance of bone remodeling where bone is broken down faster than it is remade. This condition may result from a genetic susceptibility, old age, prolonged use of steroids, alcohol abuse, excess smoking, cancer, and other diseases. This condition is more common in post-menopausal women but can be found in men as well. Medical reports indicate that osteoporosis is more common in Caucasians and Asians.
