In 2007, a study was published reporting that patients who took Avandia increased their risk of heart failure and heart attack. The study also reported that Avandia users had an increased risk of life-threatening liver problems. In 2008, the consumer group known as Public Citizen asked the FDA to put a ban on Avandia. Later the American Diabetes Association and European Association for Study of Diabetes advised against using Avandia because they believed that the risks far outweighed the benefits.
