For years, air compressor enclosure has been provided in two basic structural types: either with the enclosure and not. Though the energy effectiveness and initial capacity performance features are the same between the two types of machine, there are several basic differences, some of which might impact long term performance.

The benefits

A regular air compressor enclosure is designed with roof and body panels that create a protective cabinet across vital components. There are various benefits to this design.

1. Silent operation: The roof and body panels of an enclosed compressor generally use duct sound attenuator material in their construction, which is conducive to a reduction in sound. Without the sound dampening impacts of a cabinet, hearing protection is generally needed while in the compressor room or while working near the non-enclosed compressor.

2. Longer service intervals: Enclosed compressors ...
... maintain vital components, like filters, coolers, and motors safe and pretty clean. With a non-enclosed compressor, the vital components are vulnerable to extra dirt and moisture as there is no protective cabinet, which may cause shorter service intervals and higher maintenance expenses.

3. Easy ducting: As enclosures are generally designed with outlet grates and cooling air inlet, ducting can be attached conveniently. Ducting is suggested in applications where the ambience is extremely hot or cold, wet or dirty. It enables the compressor to bring in the inlet air and cooling from a different location where the air is more desirable and also to exhaust the air into another location.

4. Ideal levels of cooling air enhance energy effectiveness: Enclosures are designed to pull cooling air through the equipment, enabling the motor and other hot components to get sufficient amounts of cooling air. In a non-enclosed structure, there is no cooling air being directed across the hot components, which can prevent the motor and other vital components from cooling to the desired level. When components keep on working at a high temperature, it can compromise the durability of the components and also reduce energy effectiveness.

5. No hazard of harmful oil leakages: Enclosed air compressors generally boast oil-containing frames that capture any oil leakages, eradicating risky oil spots and slippery floors.

6. TEFC motors: Some air compressor manufacturers provide TEFC motors as a standard equipment. TEFC motors keep the motor windings clean, cool, and dry, which extends the durability of the motor and frequently results in better energy effectiveness. Many non-enclosed air compressors use Open Drip Proof motors in their design.

The main drawback of an enclosed compressor for acceptable noise level is simplicity of maintenance, as the door panels should be removed or opened to work on the equipment. Nonetheless, this disadvantage can be lessened with extra service features, like optimal placement of filters and other serviceable components, slide-out coolers and hinged cooling fans.
