Collaborating with the families and carers of people with disabilities is important in creating a strong and responsive disability support network. The journey towards independent living becomes seamless and more enriching because of the collaborative approach towards disability care. Additionally, it amplifies the benefits from various supports and services funded by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). When it comes to NDIS supports like Supported
Independent Living (SIL), families and carers can contribute to setting achievable goals for the participants and help them build life skills. It also helps the NDIS to better understand the participant’s aspirations, preferences and life goals.

Supported Independent Living is a home and living support option funded by the NDIS which helps eligible participants to access paid personal support. People with higher support needs will benefit from this as it enables them to live on their own without compromising on their supports.
