Crappie Fishing With Jigs
Fishing for crappie can at times be rather fruitless and frustrating if you aren't using the correct lures. While using live baits is ultimately the best way to reel in a bunch of crappie, jigs can also achieve comparable results.
If you happen to be fishing for spring crappie, their bite is usually rather light. Since you will need to feel these bites, use a light line like mono in 2 to 6 pounds. The reel can also be either an open faced bait-cast reel or an ultra light spinning reel. However, a simple graphite rod complete with a cork handle can also be rather sensitive to the light nibble of the crappie. However, once you have hooked your fish it is important to remember that crappie have extremely thin lips that can easily tear when hooked too aggressively, leaving you to start all over.
Jigs paired with minnows can be rather effective as minnows are the favorite food of the crappie fish. Start by placing jigs into areas where there is some structure and cover along the edges of weeds. You can also slow the boat down, letting your lip-hooked minnows trail along a fishing spot enticing the more reluctant ...
... fish into biting.
By utilizing multiple presentations of your rod, you will be able to cover a great deal of water. One rod might have a pinkie jig with or without a minnow and another rod could have a float and jig combination.
In darker, muddier waters, use jigs that have patterns on them. You may need to experiment with different colors as well. If you find that you are not having success in the murkier water, look for quieter bays with less water movement. The water here may be clearer but it will also be shallower.
If after a while however it seems that the crappie may have disappeared from your fishing spot, it is time to consider moving back out into deeper water. Many times in the summer, crappie will suspend above drop offs and other structures so don't lose hope. Stick with it, experiment with different tackle and methods. Be sure to read and research the habits of crappie fish as this could always lead to a new method or approach for you to try out. As with any kind of fishing, there is no right or wrong way to go about it.
