Points On Go Cart Construction
Building your own go cart can be a straightforward, yet challenging project. Just remember that practice makes perfect and always the effort never fails. So build your own go cart with your own style.
Go carts are a great alternative for those who want to drive but are not licensed to do so. If you have the time, you can also build your own cart for racing or just for fun.
In order to learn how to build a go cart, there are 4 main sections that make up a go cart. It comprises the main frame, steering system, drive axle and front A-arms. You can draw up your own plans or download pre-existing plans online. Just remember that adults will need a larger, stronger cart than children.
The pipe steel or metal tubing used to form the frame of your cart can be salvaged from old lawnmowers or carts. Alternatively, get them from hardware stores. A welder is needed to weld all parts together. This can be rented, or built, if you have the inclination. If your neighbor owns one, borrow it and promise to make him a go cart too.
Before you assemble the main frame and front A-arms, first check that you have measured ...
... all parts accurately in terms of length and width. Hold parts together with steel clips to keep them from moving while you weld. Always lock the bolts with the correct-size nuts interspersed with washers.
Take your time to assemble the steering system based on your schematics as this is one of the most crucial parts of the cart. You should use a 0.5" steel rod for linkages and 0.75" steel rod for the drive axles. The axles should be built with straight rods and attached to your frame with bushing. Drill cotter pins and washings through the axle to keep everything in position. The drive pulley can be directly welded to the axle, or screwed on. Make sure the drive pulley is aligned with that of the engine.
The engines can be salvaged from old carts, lawnmowers, motorcycles or even leaf blowers. Motorcycle engines will fit more easily into the assembly but lawnmower engines are cheaper, provide more torque but are slower.
Building your own cart requires good engineering mechanics. Always wear safety equipment when you are using it and never take your cart out to the open road, no matter how tempting it may be.
