The size of the production run is important especially when placing an order abroad. There are a lot of factors to consider before you can decide on what size to go for. One such factor is the budget. If the budget is tight, you can opt for large production runs. Basing on the economies of scale, the larger the order is, the lower the cost will be on a per unit basis. Most materials are also cheaper when you buy it in bulk.
Another thing to consider is the trust issue between the client and the manufacturer. Do not be misled by sampling. Sampling in general does not indicate the quality of the actual production. Try small production runs first if you want to gauge the quality of a manufacturer. If you are satisfied with all the results, then you can move on to ordering longer production runs.
If you have to meet a deadline, then long production is necessary. If the deadline is quite far off in the future, you can opt for small production instead in order to ensure quality output. It is better to produce good quality products than produce great quantities of it thereby sacrificing the quality.
Note that the ...
... set up of a production line entails thousands of dollars on the part of the manufacturer. Machines and materials need to be ordered and employees are hired for the process. If the manufacturer thinks that they will not profit from small production run, then they will not accept the task. If this is the case and you really need to release the products, then the best thing to do is to order in bulk.
Sometimes, even if there is only a small orders for the products, the manufacturers have no choice but to buy from suppliers in bulk for they can get bigger discounts this way. However, not all materials will be used in the process. This results in adding wastage and an increase in the unit cost. This is why some companies tend to prefer long production run.
The type of product that will be produced is another factor that needs consideration. Plastic materials require the largest production runs. Bags, on the other hand requires only small production run. Consult the experts if you want to know what sixe of production run is right for your product.
