Replacing Your Camry Or Tacoma Engine The Right Way
The Camry and Tacoma are two of Toyota's most successful vehicles. Millions of each vehicle have been sold. While the Toyota Tacoma Engine and the Toyota Camry engine are generally of high quality, the large number of these vehicles on the road guarantees that there will be some motor failure. This article will be broken down into three parts. The first part will be about how to replace your Toyota Tacoma Engine the right way. The second will be about how to replace your Toyota Camry engine the right way. Finally, we'll talk about some common things that should be done when installing each engine.
The most common Toyota Tacoma engine is the 3.4L 5VZFE. This motor was used from 1995 to 2004. There were several different manifold configurations used through this time period, so every Toyota Tacoma engine swap should involve moving the manifolds from your original motor to the replacement motor. If you don't do this, you might not pass an emissions inspection - or worse. Make sure you purchase new gaskets for this swap.
While the ...
... 3.4L Toyota Tacoma engine is consistent across the years, the oil pan is different between the 4x4, Pre-Runner, and 4x2 non Pre-Runner. If you it isn't correct, your Toyota Tacoma engine might not fit into your truck! Even if the oil pan is the same, it makes sense to remove it so that you can clean the oil pickup filter and reseal the oil pan. Doing this ensures that your Toyota Tacoma engine won't have any oil flow problems caused by a stopped up pick up filter and that your oil pan won't leak. It is much easier to do this type of work before you install your Toyota Tacoma engine - when it is out and easily accessible on a stand!
The 2.2L 5SFE Toyota Camry engine is, in my opinion, the best mass produced engine in history, along with its 2.0L 3SFE sibling. What very few people will tell you is that these engines are essentially the same. The 3SFE is simply not bored out as much as the 5SFE. I commonly recommend the 2.0L 3SFE be used when replacing a Toyota Camry engine because there is no noticeable difference in horsepower and the 2.0L Toyota Camry engine can be purchased with much lower mileage and at a much better price than the 2.2L Toyota Camry engine.
If you have a Toyota Camry engine earlier than 1996, you need to replace the oil pump when doing this swap because there is no crank angle sensor installed in the 3SFE. After that year, no oil pump swap is necessary for this Toyota Camry Engine.
Both of these motors have several things that should be done during the replacement process. I highly recommend replacing all gaskets and seals other than the head gasket before you install your engine. This includes the crank seal, valve cover gaskets, oil pan gasket, and intake/exhaust manifold gaskets. Further, the timing belt should be replaced, as should all wiring. This applies whether you install a new or used motor.
